Show f VEGETABLES AND OTHERWISE On account of the vegetable shower at their play and manner in which the newspaper newspaper newspaper news news- paper reporters construed the intentions of the throwers and grossly exaggerated the ti ue tie facts in the case the members of the cast and the author of the clever little comedy comedy comedy com com- edy that was presented last Monday failed to receive the credit due them for their ef ef- ef forts In fact several of the mel members ibers of the club were strongly incensed over the turn tern that was given the affair The whole trouble resulted from the vegetable throwing which was done clone in a spirit of friendliness and not because the throwers were displeased with the play or did not like the manner in which it was presented Consent had been given by members of the cast that bunches of celery an and watercress might be handed across th the footlights without causing any ill feelings but they did not invite a general shower The throwing of vegetables was unsanctioned unsanctioned and uncalled for and instead of adding adding adding add add- ing to the fun it created a sentiment of dis dis- approval The players however were not perturbed by the missiles and the play went along smoothly The newspaper accounts accounts accounts ac ac- counts of the play however would have their readers believe that the farce was wretched in its inception a and 11 presentation that the hail of onions came came forth as expressions expressions expressions ex ex- of disapproval The people left leftin leftin leftin in disgust and a riot was barely averted boldly asserted one publication It seems t the le writers saw an opportunity for a sensational sensational sensa sensa- write-up write and made ma e it appear as though the vegetable shower constituted the en entire re evenings evening's entertainment instead c ot of hei being l on only y one mere incident It is un Un- fortunate for the school and especially for forthe forthe forthe the club that such reports have gone abroad Both papers have retracted their former statements and have attempted to correct the false impressions produced but no amount of retracting can fully correct the original false impressions Several persons who saw the newspaper accounts but did not see the play have been heard to re remark remark remark re- re mark Was that play of the Scribblers really as bad as the papers say it was Vas etc ere Elsewhere in this paper may be found a criticism of the play by an unbiased writer who is in a position to judge fairly as as' as ast to t the merits of the play and as to the excellence excellence excel excel- lence or non excellence of the work of the actors From the trend of this article and we dare say from the opinions of all the spectators at the little farce it may be said that both author and players deserve credit for the showing made so we say to the persons persons persons per per- sons responsible for the false impressions that were sent abroad Pass beribboned celery across the footlights if you will but remember that it has long been considered bad taste to throw anything heavier than thana a cannon ball point blank at a cheerful Thespian And to the newspaper reporters we say Be sensational if the city editor demands it but stick to the truth boys stick to the tile truth |
