Show o o oIS IS EVERY U MAN A COWARD It is b a serious matter to charge a man with being a coward and doubly serio serious to charge over seven hundred with a like of of- It must be certain therefore that there is some foundation to an 1 charging every Utah man something akin to disloyalty Webster gives v ne me definition definition definition of a coward Century another and the International another But none of these treat of the type of oi coward that we nave have navet t to deal with Zith at pres present nt Who among us as much was as we love the the U U as much as we we love the traditions handed down own to us by the pioneers who were instrumental in founding the they early schools have the courage to speak our mind when once we are without the confines of the state We Ve allow ourselves to be talked into believing that the East is the only home of learning we hear the praises of Cornell Princeton and Michigan 1 sung till our ears are stunned with the reverberations We idle by while others talk of Yale Harvard I and Johns Hopkins Yet we know in our hearts that the U TJ too ranks with them s so far as technical standing is concerned We do not claim Utah to be equal in age to these nor do we boast of as asman many many man cobwebs hanging over our class room as they but hut we DO know that actually their standing is not one whit better than our own o As an example take the University of Michigan's J s Mining l Department How does it rank with Utah When plain facts are reached we find that Utah requires two more units for entrance than do they And Michigan's standard is sometime or other flaunted before our eyes till we imagine it covers the whole heavens V VV We VVe Te e know that and the mining course is forte should attain some standing Let us then look at the smallest and youngest department department department depart depart- ment of the school the department of law Students taking the year two-year course here at home are admitted without question to the finishing year vear of law at Chicago University AND CHICAGO CI IS GLAD TO GET THEM As for the rank of the University of Utah among other schools we but have to refer to the records which show that wherever a Utah student has presented credits they have hav been accepted f for r their face value and Utah students at these institutions have come out with flying colors Is it no wonder then why w we charge many many of the school with being cowards Cowards in the sense that we allow v some fellow bearing the banner of f age to confuse us and lead us to that because we weare weare weare are situated more than Fifty Miles 1 from Boston we are numbskulls in the matter of learning In the West we have pride enough to assert that we are tue ading cading school of the I Intermountain country Why not go one step further and meet the world with a cold fearless eye In that way the great body of people as well as ourselves will understand our position and the high school graduates of the state will come to realize that here at home they can obtain n na a college degree whose value will win be disclaimed disclaimed disclaimed dis- dis claimed by no one and that only when they desire more advanced specialization need they leave the confines of the state suite 10 LO se secure secure secure se- se cure their education |
