Show THERE r HERE are probably something more than one thousand alumni alum alum- ni Ili of the University including grad- grad The of the college def de- de f Alumni graduates of Scholarship the N Normal onnal school and those who were in attendance in the ther r very early years before regular courses were organized and who were admitted to alumni privileges Some twelve years ago all tuition was abolished only a small entrance fee being exacted Even before this time the tuition was not at all great The higher education therefore of the greater part of the graduates has cost each person but a trifle beyond the expense for board and clothes r which would have had to be borne at any rate Most of the graduates are occupying positions many times r 1 I Imore more honorable and far more lucrative lucrative lucrative lucra lucra- tive than would have been possible without the education Some of these alumni profoundly impressed with their moral debt to their Alma Mater ater have labored to increase her efficiency and popularity A few years ago a movement was begun to accumulate by subscription a fund of not less than 2500 for the endowment endowment endowment en en- of a scholarship to assist some worthy son or daughter of Utah to gain a higher education A decent feeling of gratitude it would seem would have made the raising of this amount small among so many an easy task But after several several several sev sev- eral years of really arduous labor only a trifle more than had been secured of which amount Apostle Heber J. J Grant for himself and members of his family family also also alumni contributed alumni contributed nearly one- one third At chapel on Wednesday November November November No No- vember 4 Mr Grant in a vigorous address counselled persistence and courage in struggling toward everything everything everything every every- thing better and urged enthusiastic and practical loyalty to the institution institution institution tion that is and will be so potent a factor in our success Further he lamented in no uncertain tones the apparent lack of gratitude of the greater part of the alumni as shown in their apathy toward the scholarship scholarship scholarship scholar scholar- ship fund He then announced that he could be drawn upon for more if need be to complete this endowment No wonder the students students students stu stu- dents applauded And they would have applauded still more had they known that just before he entered the room Mr Grant showed his love for his Kindly Mother by handing handing handing hand hand- ing President Kingsbury his check for on one thousand dollars to be added added added add add- ed to his past contributions Many 1 alumni have told of their love love but but how many have done anything else All honor to the few zealous brethren brethren breth breth- ren of ours who have spoken their love in silvery tones Shame to the thousand who have employed their University training to rise but who were not willing to contribute ty-five ty cents a month for one school year to make up the desired sum At the present time ten ten cents a month two month two street car fares the fares the cost o of f one ice cream soda the soda the price o of f one cigar will cigar will complete the amount Think of it One dollar dollar dollar dol dol- lar apiece from those who have not yet subscribed and some struggling youth will have it in his power to tomake tomake tomake make himself something that will add honor to himself and glory to the state and perhaps untold blessings blessings blessings bless bless- ings to human kind If there were more Heber J. J Grants our hopes for generous endowments endowments endowments en en- for the library for further further further fur fur- ther physical equipment for a gymnasium gymnasium gym gym- nasi urn for professorships and for fellowships would be realized Shall it be said that the Alumni of the University of Utah Utah Utah-a a few of her noble children excepted excepted are are guilty of the crime of ingratitude Were there not ten cleansed but where are the nine |
