A B. B For three years he taught physics and astronomy in inthe inthe inthe the Burlington High School at the the s same me time doing post-graduate post work in the University of Iowa from which institution he took the degree of A. A M. M in 1899 From 1898 to 1902 Dr Parsons was a graduate student in Johns Hopkins University University University sity doing work in physics mathematics mathematics mathematics mathe mathe- matics and chemistry He was a fellow fellow felt fel fel- t low in physics from 1900 In 1 1902 he took the degree of Ph D. D from the Johns Hopkins University 71 I J LJ 1 the subject of his thesis being The Spectrum of Hydrogen Doctor Parsons remained at Johns Hopkins as assistant in physics until 1903 when he was employed by the University University University Uni Uni- of Utah Professor Wilson who is conducting conducting conducting con con- ducting courses in engineering and hydraulics comes from New York State He began his educational training in the city of Utica where he attended the Utica Academy After leaving the academy academy academy acad acad- emy he was employed in the U. U S. S Coast and Geodetic Survey in Maryland and later as engineer in inthe inthe inthe the extension of the works water-works system of Utica N. E in 1901 Since that time most of his work has been done in connection with the U. U S. S Lake Survey He has been employed on the Detroit River and at Sault Sainte Marie Michigan on Lake Saint Clair and the west end of Lake Erie and on the Niagara River Instructor William Blum assistant assistant assistant assist assist- ant in chemistry is a Philadelphia product having begun his education in the public schools of that city In 1899 he graduated from the Central High School For the next four years he attended the University University University sity of Pennsylvania taking the degree degree degree de de- gree of B. B S. S in Chemistry in in 1903 OH MY The most exciting event that has occurred since the Sophomore Vegetable Vegetable etab e Shower of a year ago was the initiation of about eighteen girls into that wonderful organization of College Women That such lovely girls as those belonging to the Society Society Society So So- could evolve and carry out such horrifying devices as were used is certainly astounding During the first part of the initiation initiation initiation the candidates were dealt with separately The victim was first forced to eat a raw frog i. i e. e she thought she ate it but instead she swallowed a large slimy oyster After the frog was killed and dressed the victim was blindfolded her mouth open with a rusty crow-bar crow and the oyster was slipped in If the oyster went down and stayed the second step was proceeded proceed proceed- ed with This consisted of a visit to Hell The candidate was placed J in a chair with her head held in such a position that she could not see what went on behind her While one attendant removed the victims victim's collar another brought a apan apan apan pan of water and a third sharpened a large carving knife The death sentence was then pronounced pronounced pro pro- pronounced in a solemn voice by a girl dressed to represent Satan The victims victim's head was held over a pan of water and a knife drawn across her throat To all appearances the bleeding was most profuse for about a pint of red ink was used for each slaughter It appeared so real that six of the victims and two others fainted away While she was still weak from fright and the loss of blood the victim was almost suffocated with the hellish fumes of sulphur She was then brought back to earth by the familiar odor of hydrogen sulphide and presented with a bouquet of sunflowers soaked in carbon So as to make the rite still more disagreeable her own shoes were removed A large charcoal ring was then drawn around her left optic she was then made to stand on her head in the corner and deliver an extemporaneous ous address after which she was released for the time After all the candidates had been through the mill they were taken to the top floor of the Library Building Building Building Build Build- ing blindfolded feet tied together and hands tied behind them and were made to find their way back to the College Women's room before they were released At least this is what a fly on the wall said hap hap- J I |
