belo the Medical Institution tk was the Tap It was only a dry r s wooden tap however which Lulu Lulu Lu a lu Sutton the commissary had hada found out on the hill one day The name name he he thought though would be suggestive stag sug J if nothing more and therefore the tent was thus named Tapping was done on y the stranger who entered the tent 1 however and not on its it's content for Lulu seemed to be a shark at the dealers of the improvised improvised improvised im im- wheel which Jim Donaldson Don Donaldson Donaldson Don Don- 1 carried about the camp J Jumbo Bryant was always J ready to second t the e tapping process as inaugurated by th the commissary and faithfully followed followed fol fol- iJ lowed and enlarged upon by Earl Havener I the man of many I names prominent of which were Dotty and Shylock and Dearie The I last st tent or rather tather the first fust one depending entirely upon which way this wonderful camp k i. i was entered was the home of tl the e four sharks Happy Wilson Wilson Wil Wil- son the Earl of Rastus tV Woodley alias Dago Joe Silent Simpson and Easy Mark Downey They al always always always al- al ways managed to cop on to the logarithm tables Argosies prayer books and all other information information information mation that was loose about the J camp About feet from the end oi ot i ithe the main street and in another grove giove the dining tent was t ed When all other things failed a call for meals aroused everyone everyone everyone every every- one from the tents Cook Manwaring Manwaring Man Man- 1 waring had a very sweet way of L calling Last Call and all the 1 fellows had a very vigorous way of responding to the same It a awas was just one natured good-natured rush r vr for places at the table On that table through the energetic efforts t. t of the commissary there always appeared a good variety of K grub At least a half of dozen ii t. t different kinds of breakfast foods fruit daily the famous ham and b coffee and other suitable articles of camp diet were served there J Each meal was different from the theone theone one preceding But the first meal was the best one eaten in camp t t because every fellow w was vas hungry and the f fresh esh mountain air had a wonderful effect upon the appe appe- tite Strawberries occasionally a appeared for dessert The dessert problem was was the most difficult one for the commissary to handle The of pie as dessert was finally finally finally fin fin- ally discontinued because Tiny Higgins insisted on having two e. e pieces It might incidentally be mentioned men men- here that among the choice t. t meals served in Camp Maples l one of the best was vas served away from i the dining tent and at a most unexpected unexpected unexpected un un- expected hour that was not set sett t k F by the hosts The hosts in this case proved to be Pet Grannie f and Snipe Snipe with his V well ell r known ability at grafting and his winning way vay of securing r things had borrowed two cans of jam j aln and a couple of pounds Rounds of oft t crackers from the cooks cook's tent and nd f. f brought them to the Green Table Table Table Ta Ta- ble to save for hard times They were secretly hidden under the bed but some one located tl them em j So one night at about ten o'clock everybody in the camp visited the then n y J j V i i Green Table and invited Pet to sing Papa Loves Mamma 1 J and suggested that Grannie and Snipe join in the chorus The unexpected pleasure of 1 such honor an entirely overcame them and with faces beaming and eyes raised heavel heavenward ward they i poured their th ir souls into the strains which have since made Pet fa famous famous fa- fa Inous strains which later caused r him to careen around the Snorting Snorting Snorting Snort ing Post and strains that were vere 1 only subdued by singing Nero My l Dog Has Flees Just as cordial as the J entering words of the many guests had been so their parting words but why should they leave so soon The knights oi of the Green Table sat and wondered wondered won von dered dered but sounds from lower Main lain Street stirred them to actio ac- ac 4 tio tion Snipe gave one glance under under under un un- der the bed Pet felt between th the blankets for the two cans of jam and Granny wailed Then they rushed to the scene of the banquet banquet banquet ban ban- only to find Jumbo and Braggo with their faces covered with jam and the empty can could be seen journeying down the giraffes giraffe's neck There was vas one cracker left Snipe and Grannie never sing that melody anymore and they are particularly cautious about joining in the chorus no matter what the song only on rare occasions that Pet musters courage courage cour cour- cour- cour courage age to sing that song and only then after meals I To be Continued Jt es S 1 y S iio r R 5 5 tY o 1 iNd ft 7 r t i t |
