F ESTABLISHED A school of physical education tion in the West Vest is a feature which has long been needed in this section of the country With characteristic characteristic characteristic char char- aggressiveness the faculty of our University has taken the first steps to prep prepare re for such a school The ultimate result of oft t the plan which has now v been perfected will be the establishment 4 Y I i a of f a four y years years' ars' ars summer summer school course in physical education the same to be conducted by educators of national repute The plans have so far been perfected that the first year of this course will b be given during the summer of 1908 The most important important important im im- move made by Professor Babcock and Mr 11 Maddock 1 who are are most deeply interested in the establishment of the school is the securing of Doctor William Gilbert Ander Anderson on of Yale University Doctor Anderson founded and nd was president of the famous school of physical education at Chautauqua New York During the past three years he has been director of the Yale gymnasium and professor of physical education at Yale It was only because of the determination of the Yale authorities to abolish all summer school work that it was possible to sect secure secure re the services of Professor Anderson Doctor Anderson will not only cond conduct ct classes lasses in the theory of this subject but he will devote consid considerable r ble time to practical gymnasium work Dr W. W Wayne Babcock M. M D. D and A. A 1 M. M professor of surgery surgery surgery sur sur- gery at Temple University and chief surgeon on of the Samaritan and Garretson hospitals of Philadelphia a brother of Miss Babcock will give a special series of lectures during the summer Other physicians of Salt Lake who are recognized experts along this line will also be invited to speak Professor Babcock has been connected with the Harvard summer school for four years She will also ta take e an important part in the summer school Miss Martha J. J Johnson supervisor of physical culture in the Salt Lake City public schools will also be associated with Miss 1 Babcock in in the new work The work in the mens men's gymnasium will be conducted by Coach Joe Maddock 1 and E. E EJ J. J Milne 1 of the L. L D. D S S. University Coach Maddock l is recognized as especially strong in gymnastics In his native state he won the prize as the best all around athlete in 1904 Coache Milne has been an instructor at Chautauqua l for two summers so he will be thoroughly familiar with the work The summer school of physical education will give three lines of work The first and most important branch of work will be a course which will qualify persons for positions as directors of physical education in high schools The second course will prepare the student for similar positions in the elementary schools and the third course will be especially adapted for those students who do not desire to specialize in this work vork but who are interested in knowing more of the subject N Next ext year a second year of the first course mentioned will be established and thus each succeeding year a new terms term's work will be added and finally a full four year course will be given at the University summer school r The work which will be given at the summer school will be beof beof M- M of the same high character as that given in the large institutions t that make a specialty of such courses of instruction VV Work ork of this nature is not given to any great extent west of I New York The University of Chicago gives some work of this nature nature nature na na- ture but no attempt is made to carry the work on elaborately The importance of the establishment of this new school may J not fully realized by some owing to the fact that the importance and significance of this line of work is not generally appreciated But few persons realize the demand for such a school But there y is a great demand for the graduates of such a school Heretofore the demand has been filled by graduates of eastern schools or those persons in the west interested in this subject have been compelled compelled compelled com com- r to go east for their training One of the biggest factors in creating a d demand mand for new teachers of this kind in the west and one which will continue to create create create cre cre- ate this demand to a greater extent as the years go by is the new F and widespread movement throughout this state and surrounding states toward th the establishment of high schools I In Utah particularly there is also another factor which within with with- in the next four years four years must create a demand for such persons t The last leg legislature slature passed a bill permitting the assessing of a special tax for the establishment of gymnasiums throughout the State Many l of the the smaller towns of Utah have already voted this special tax and the tI movement is growing daily These new gymnasiums gymnasiums gymnasiums will be built within the next two years There will then be bea beJ J a great demand f for r directors in these gymnasiums t 1 The establishment of the new school of ph physical education will also contribute an attraction to the University of Utah summer school It will make possible the instruction in this branch at least r to some extent of o all students who attend the summer school It will also prove a good drawing card for the summer school |
