Show P i. i AN EMINENT VISITOR In the last issue of the Chronicle Chronicle Chron Chron- icle we told of the visit of Prot Proto Hewitt who urged the scientific study of early races This week a man of national importance along the line of applied science has visited our school Nearly every engineer has has heard of Nathaniel Shaler and the advanced students recognize him as a reliable authority While dean of the Lawrence school he proved to be one of the greatest men in the institution Upon his death Wallace Clement Sabine was selected by Pres Eliot as the man best qualified to direct the scientific work at that institution Since the appointment of Prof Sabine the graduate school of applied applied applied ap ap- plied science has supplanted the Lawrence Scientific School and is advancing to the position of the leading college of Harvard Prof Sabine is designer of Symphony Symphony Sym Sym- Symphony phony Hall in Boston the most perfect building in the world for its acoustic properties Prof Sabine stated that he was particularly interested in his special lines He was impressed impressed impressed im im- pressed with the equipment and rapidity with which engineering has been built up in the University ty of Utah He was pleased with the splendid location and nd standing standing standing stand stand- ing of the buildings Prof Reynolds introduced Prof Sabine sabin to the class in Eng I wh where re he lie spoke on on Some things that bring success His talk in essence was as follows follows follows fol fol- lows Our object in going to school is not so much to gain knowledge as to gain habits of application Throughout the whole range of study the object is to give the student t the e power to think A college education is disastrous for the few who study their text textbook textbook textbook book without acquiring the habit of thinking |
