Show r OREGON ORATORS WIN In the debate at Barratt Hall Friday evening April 26 CI Ci Chris Christen ris- ris risten isten ten Jensen and Richard Young of the University met Francis Galloway and John Veach of the U. U of Oregon The question was Resolved that the fifteenth amendment and section two of the fourteenth amendment of the federal constitution should be re refi re- re fi pealed It being conceded that the difficulties of repealing shall not enter into the discussion These amendments protect the negro from suffrage tion Utah maintained the affirmative affirmative affirmative tive with a careful and well developed developed developed de de- plan Both teams met mett t the issues fairly and squarely Our men did excellent for their theirl Fh l first inter-collegiate inter debate It would be safe to say that with al almost almost almost al- al most any team they would have won at least two thirds of the judges But Oregon sent two men who have debated the identical identical identical iden iden- question at least four times and have had an extraordinary chance to study the point of con con- The feature of the debate was vas clearly the terse and appropriate way in which Mr Jensen replied to Veach when he butted in in Jensens Jensen's final rebuttal Veach resorted to the unusual tactic of attempting to rattle the speaker in his final rebuttal But much to his chagrin Mr Jensen was equal to the occasion To the first interruption Mr Jensen i showed shoved that he lie he had hada a a solid basis for fOl the challenged ged statement and continued but to the second attack attack attack at at- tack he squelched the shrewd 1 Oregonian quickly and tersely Mr Young throughout his speech and nd rebuttal tal used his time timeto to the best advantage with forceful forceful force force- ful fur and arguments A summary of the argument is isas isas isas as follows Mr Young opened the debate for the affirmative reviewing the history of the question and outlining outlining outlining out out- lining the line Ene of argument to be followed by the affirmative The repealing of Sec 2 of the four fourteenth fourteenth four four- amendment he lie held would follow as a natural result if the union should decide to do away with the fifteenth amend amend- ment for the negro negro negro ne ne- gro he held had proven detrimental detrimental detrimental detri detri- mental to the nation He pointed out the the diff difference rence between the black and the white maintaining the superiority of the latter Educational Educational Educational Ed Ed- tests could not be used as the lowest white because of inherent qualities was far farr better than the educated negro Mr Veach followed He claimed claim claim- ed the condition alluded to bythe bythe by bythe the affirmative had now passed and would not recur The negative negative nega nega- tive he asserted would only hold for equality before the law The right of suffrage he held was the highest gift of the commonwealth commonwealth commonwealth common common- wealth and should it be removed the negro would no longer haver have r any incentive to work He held that the effect of the amendments was visible in the shaping of f the constitutions of the Southern States within the last ten years Mr 1 Jensen followed Mr Veach for the affirmative The solution of the negro problem he lie declared was the problem of the South not of the whole count country y and should it be settled it could only be from within This he maintained maintained main maintained main main- was the view taken by the country as indicated by declarations declarations declarations declara declara- of the president non-action non of the U. clauses were repealed If the law was not enforced it should be re repealed repealed repealed re- re I pealed he declared The negro was not able to use his right of franchise as indicated by his failure to prevent the circumvention tion of the same by the different southern states Air Mr Galloway followed for the affirmative He Ie did not believe in the entire franchise of the negro negro negro ne- ne gro but held that it would be a violation of justice to withdraw the same entirely from the educated educated educated edu edu- and deserving negroes The sensation of of his speech 3 came after a discussion of present conditions in the South in which he stated there had been no no- fraud ti at the polls Galloway produced a chart which showed the change in the conditions in the negro r Mr Young was allowed five minutes for the affirmative in re re- He declared the affirmative tive ve had shown conclusively that the repealing of the amendments did not mean complete disfranchisement appealed to by their own team Speaking after the debate Mr Veach said l he lie e wished l' l to compliment the Utah people on the game manner in which they lost In the six debates in which he had trend of his thought by the interruption The Attendance If the attendance at the Utah Utah- Oregon debate were taken as as s an indication of the interest at the theD theU theU U D in in such contests it would be somewhat of a reflection on the institution But the fact that the following day was to see an important important important im im- field meet in which the athletes of the U D were to participate participate par par participate relieves the situation to toan toan toan an extent and a accounts counts for the absence of at least some who otherwise would have nave been pres pres- ent The TIle athletes were of course at home sleeping in order to be in good condition for the morrow and others were no doubt too busy preparing to go on the excursion excursion excursion ex ex- with the
