Show Iron County Political Forces Set 1956 Planning Convention Political activities on the local evel have boon started in Iron Jounty with the calling of mass meetings and the county conven-ion conven-ion by both political parties. The Democratic party began tip activities with mass meetings 'icld Wednesday night, to name lelegates to the county conven-ion conven-ion to be held in Parowan on March 3. Republican mass meetings meet-ings will be held at on March 17. with the county convention set for March 21 at Parowan. i Party Election At the county conventions, county organizations will be perfected per-fected by both parties with the , election of a county chairman, vice chairman, secretary, treasurer treasur-er and a central committee. The Primary conventions' for the nomination of candidates for county offices to be filled this year will be hejd In August, it is understood. Four county offices are to be filled this year, wtth the greatest attention being focused on the selection of a State Senator from Iron County, because changes : made by the re-apportlonment bill adopted by the last legislature. legisla-ture. In the past Iron and Washington Wash-ington county have been In the 11th Senatorial District, with one senator named from the two counties. Under the new set-up each of the two counties will be entitled to a Senator. OrvlUe Hafen of St. George Is currently serving as I Senator from the two counties. State Representative The County will also elect a rep-resentative rep-resentative to the State Legislature, Legis-lature, the term of Heber M. Sevy, Republican, expiring this year. While the Defoeratic party has not publicly indicated a choice for either of the two positions as yet, there does seem to be some 'sentiment on the part of many Republicans that Mr. Sevy may be the party's candidate for State Senator, with a new man to be selected for the Representative Representa-tive post. There has also been some Indication that Charles R. Hunter, member of the USAC Hoard of Trustees and prominent ' leader In the Republican party in Iron County, may be the party's I choice for Senator. Two county commissioners must also be elected this year, the terms of Jesse Guymon. Republican, Re-publican, and Warren Bulloch... elected on an Independent ticket, expiring this year. Of course, the county will participate par-ticipate in the selection of candidates can-didates for state and national of-ties, of-ties, but most attention at present pres-ent Is being focused on the local officers and possible timber to fill these Important positions. |
