Show Government Payments to Individuals Account for Largest Source of Income Payments to Individuals by governmental units (Federal, state and local) account for the largest single source of personal person-al Income In Utah. This point was brought out in a report analyzing an-alyzing personal Income payments pay-ments In Utah by Utah Foundation, Founda-tion, the private governmental . research organization. According to the Foundation study, government payments to Utahns in the form of wages, salaries, subsidies, and benefits amounted to $476 million In 1962, or approximately 23.6 of Utah's total personal Income. Throughout Through-out the the United States, about 19.6 of all personal Income was derived from government sources last year. i The report notes that the proportion pro-portion of Utah's personal Income In-come received from governmental governmen-tal Bourses rose materially during dur-ing the depression years of the 1930's, In the war years of the 19408 and in the Korean-War period of the early 1950's. Since 1955 personal Income from government gov-ernment has stabilized at somewhere some-where between 23 and 21 of the total. Foundation analysts observe that In addition to these direct government payments, a substantial substan-tial part of Utah's private economy eco-nomy Is related to government activities. This accounts for roughly 30 of the manufacturing manufactur-ing workforce and 6 of the total to-tal non-agricultural workforce in Utah. Total personal income received receiv-ed by Utahna from all sources last year amounted to $2,015,000,-000, $2,015,000,-000, an increase of approximately $173 million above the 1961 level. lev-el. The Foundation study notes that this was the largest single year's increase since the war years pf the early 19408. Despite the rise in personal in come, Utah still ranks well below be-low the U. S. average in the am-' ount of personal Income per inhabitant in-habitant Last year per capital Income in Utah was equal to $2,084, an amount 12 below the national average of $2,366 per capital. Utah ranks 31st among the 50 states in per capita personal per-sonal Income, which U. S. Department De-partment of Commerce analysts term "the most comprehensive measure of economic acuvity available on a geographic basis." In addition to being below the U. S. average, per capita Income in Utah was 4 under the average aver-age of the eight Mountain States and 21 below the average of the 11 Western States. Only Idaho Ida-ho and New Mexico among the Western States had a lower per capita Income. The report shows that the rate of growth in the Utah economy during recent years . has bet ti somewhat greater Uwiti the rate for the national as a whole. Between Be-tween 1952 and 1962 total personal per-sonal Income ro 84 in Utah compared with a 62 Increase for the entire nation. On a per-capita per-capita basis, however, the economic eco-nomic growth in Utah during the past decade has been slightly greater than that of the nation 38.6 In Utah and 37 In the U. S. since 1952.
