Show THE TE DEBATE On Friday night nigh May 24 the j v large gymnasium of the Nevada University was filled with students and Reno people gathered to hear the debate between chosen teams from the State Universities Universities' of N Nevada Nevada Ne Ne- e vada and Utah The Utah boys reached the hall hallat r at and found the Nevada debaters debaters debaters de de- baters and the judges of the contest contest contest con con- test present They were introduced ced c ed to the Nevada boys and to the judges and chatted with them them for fora a few minutes The chairman of the evening after a few introductory remarks remarks presented Mark Brown of the U. U of U the first speaker ker for th the af af- Mr Brown outlined the plan pan of the arguments of his side stated that the would d' d prove the promotion of industry by subsidy bounty or bonus ethically os unjust and economically unsound rf He then took up a general argument argument argument ment along along- these thes lines showing ving shO that Governmental aid to private in industries industries industries in- in subverts individual rights gives a flavor of merchandising to American politics destroys destroy natural international exchange and prevents men from buying in inthe inthe inthe the cheapest and selling in the dearest dearest dearest dear dear- est market Geo followed forthe for the Nevadans t He made no attempt attempt attempt at at- tempt at rebuttal The speaker J J showed that showed that our naval victories of 1812 were due in a large measure s i to the fishing subsidy that had been o granted He made an attempt to B show that the homestead act and f the mining act were bounties to the f and mining industries J re respectively He then branched t out on the benefits that have resulted result result- ed from the telegraph system and concluded that the opposed opposed opposed op op- posed to justice and sound equity third because it opens up channels for political corruption and fourth because it results in social and moral decadence The speaker proved his propositions propositions propositions logically and then clinched them with practical illustrations ons Erwin Ayers took up the cause for Nevada In the face of the affirmatives affirmative's affirmatives affirmative's affirmatives affirmative's af af- arguments he d claired that it had been asserted not proven en that subsidies and bounties were unjust We agree with the affirmatives said the speaker that the proper function of governments is is to promote the general welfare He continued to show that although although although al al- though governmental aid favored means nothing but ut national impoverishment r acres of land he said have been misappropriated to railroads through the bounty system in the United States He declared that although the owners of the Utah Sugar industry announced announced announced an an- that they would go bankrupt bankrupt bankrupt bank bank- rupt without a bounty yet no sooner soon sooner soon soon- er had a continuance of aid been denied them than they declared a dividend of fifteen percent Taking a view of our natural resources resources resources re re- sources especially our steel ind industry industry indus indus- us- us try the d debater bater showed that we can build ships as cheaply as any other country he cited cases where American ship builders had received ed contracts to build ships in open competition with the world Hence subsidies to Merchant Marine were unnecessary and therefore a loss to society Bon Bonham ham for the Nevadans followed followed followed fol fol- lowed he d dwelt elt at length upon in the audience that the Utah boys had the debate by a large margin and Utah etah debaters expected nothing else since the negative had failed to meet their arguments After half a-half hour the judges appeared appeared appeared ap ap- and one of them announced ed the decision as follows all were unanimous that the Nevada boys were superior in argumentation all were unanimous that the Utah boys were better in ip delivery one was of opinion that all in all the Utah debaters were superior two however however however how how- ever ever were in favor ot of the Nevada team and so the decision was given en to them Commenting further the judge said We would advise both sid sides js s to strike the strong points joints of their opponent This he d dEclared de declared dE- dE dared both sides absolutely fail- fail to do By the last statement the judges fudges freely admit that the negative failed absolutely to strike the Iu strong points joints of the affirmative According to rules of debate the affirmative side have the burden of proof it must make the case the negative must refute the arguments advanced by bythe bythe bythe the affirmative Now if the ments of the affirmative debaters tilli were such that the negative failed I absolutely to strike their t strong points then surely they established their case and should have been given the decision regardless of their theirs s superiority in delivery n Although the decision came carne as a great surprise to the Nevada students students stu students stu- stu dents they soon recovered themselves themselves themselves them them- selves and manifested their feelings feel- feel 6 ings by carrying their their debaters J around the room Many Reno Citizens freely gave their opinion that the should have had han the decision The boys received many compliments on J their delivery and stage presence |
