Show tji College Spirit r. r It has frequently been charged f that the students of the University lack the college spirit that is evinced by the students of similar institutions institutions institutions in the East There is pro probably bably b- b ably some truth in the statement but we believe this this- attitude is due more to our peculiar conditions of college life than to any deficiency of f native patriotism Because when it comes to upholding the honor of our state or nation it may truthfully he be said that Utah's educated citizens are not among the tardy But to the one who sees our contests in athletics and debates our list of paper subscribers and it would often appear that we have f not enough active college patriot patriot- ism This seeming want of unity and life in the affairs of our institution institution institution may be attributed to various causes In the arrangement of our courses of study there thee is not the marked division of classes found in most colleges and so the students students students stu stu- dents do not think it obligatory obligator that they should work in behalf of any particular class Those who rank as members of a given clas class are not so amb ambitious that their class should outstrip all the others in the various events as they would be if there were clearer distinctions Then again mo mm mot t colleges have dormitories and boarding houses connected with them In these a asocial asocial asocial social life and unity grows up among the students that cannot be found elsewhere From this kind of life develops a tender feeling for college and fellow-classmate fellow that is not formed when students live in various various various vari vari- ous parts of a city under different conditions seldom seeing each other except in the room class-room and spending their leisure hours with friends who are not especially in interested interested interested in- in in college life But these are re conditions that can be remedied If we are as is probable in procuring sixty acres more of land from the government there will be lie ample room room- tor these ad ad- With this improvement and our present condition there is every reason to believe that the University of Utah will have a a. college spirit that will carry everything everything everything every every- thing before it In the meantime let let letus us assume this feeling if we wei i cannot make it real and soon necessity necessity necessity sity will give us land dormitories houses boarding ana ann then victory then victory in in all our undertakings 3 r The athletic tic contest between the college students and the preparatory tory and normal students was watched watch watch- ed with interest by nearly all connected connected connected con con- with the school and was no doubt quite successful in arousing a considerable amount of sound healthy rivalry in in athletics between the two departments of the tion We Ve hope it will be the beginning beginning beginning be be- ginning of a series of such contests to be held in future years one or or r more each season Th There re is no reason why this thi should not be made madet madeR t R- R RL L L of immense benefit to the school by furnishing the boys an added incentive incentive incentive in in- to maintain a fairly high degree of excellence in athletic sports so that we may have a good chance to win some honors in case of contests with other institutions 3 Ei Many of the students have complained complained complained com com- of the sweeping in the early afternoon of the halls and rooms which are thereby sometimes filled with dust and this was also pr protested pro protested pro pro- tested against very emphatically in the Chronicle some sometime time ago no notice however was taken of this r and the nuisance has been con con- The students again protest against it and ask either that it be discontinued or that a valid reason be given for ignoring their desires EThe E- E The addresses by Professor Brimhall Brimhall Brimhall Brim- Brim hall and Superintendent Brown at atthe atthe atthe the Normal Society were certainly greatly appreciated by those who heard them The latter talk especially especially especially was so full of important practical practical practical suggestions to prospective teachers that all who did not hear hearit it missed an opportunity for forgetting getting many valuable hints Although there was a very fair attendance at each meeting it might have been much larger and it can safely be said that every student who is in interested interested interested in- in in subjects of a pedagogical cal nature or who expects to become become become be be- come a teacher in the near future would have spent two very profitable profitable profitable profit profit- able hours at these lectures 1 |
