Show City City Lions Club Will Sponsor Marine Band Concert The 163-year-old United States Marine Band, the oldest military symphonic musical organization in the country, will visit Cedar City on Nov. 'i. J2, under auspices aus-pices of the Cedar City Lions Club, as part of the Presidentlal-ly-approved tour, covering the Pacific Coast states and 11 western west-ern states en route the first such tour since 1923. The tour will open at Kennett Square, Pa. on Sept. 16 carry the band approximately 11,000 miles and conclude at Harrisonburg, Va., on Nov. 21. Matinee Evening Shows Foyer Olsen, has announced that matinee and evening concerts con-certs will be presented at Col-I Col-I lege of Southern Utah f ieldhouse, with musical works by the world's finest composers and stirring ; marches which have brought the Marine Band acclaim from visiting visit-ing dignitaries of almost every country in the world. ! Under the leadership of Lt. Col. Albert Schoepper, the Marine Band is known to millions of Americans through its annual tours, its frequent radio broadcasts broad-casts and television appearances, and Its concert series in the Nation's Na-tion's Capital. The annual tours originated under the direction of John Philip Sousa in 1891 and have afforded Americans living outside of the Washington area an opportunity to see and hear , the world famous band, whose j history goes back father than the , capital city Itself. To be accepted In the band, an applicant must pass a strenuous audition and undergo a rigid physical examination. When the Marine Band appears In Cedar City on Nov. 2 it will mark the first concert appearance appear-ance of the colorful musical organization or-ganization in this community. |
