Show O EVERAL times of late a matter has SEVERAL O been called to our attention and we have been urged to fo say som something thing regarding regarding regarding re re- garding it Personally we have no in interest interest interest in- in terest in it further than that which we feel for everything which effects the welfare welfare welfare wel wel- fare of the students The matter in question is this One of our Professors is very energetic energetic energetic ener ener- getic in requiring students to prepare for him abstracts or outlines of the different different different dif dif- ferent parts of his subjects as they are passed over This certainly is most commendable and if properly conducted would result in great good to his stu stu- dents But the plan as followed by him is a positive injury to his students It is stated that these plans some of them requiring several hours for preparation preparation preparation pre pre- are received by the Professor filed away and in due time delivered j- j back never having been opened after they left the students student's hand It is further said that students suspecting J this to test the matter handed in papers written on subjects entirely foreign foreign foreign for for- eign and in one case presented a paper on which was worked some problems problem in Algebra After a time even this was re received received received re- re back bearing the good check mark The ill effects of such teaching as this is too obvious to call for comment If such is in accordance wi with th Psychological ical and Pedagogical principles either the principles or the students' students minds ought to be changed It encourages carelessness and the effect on the students student's English is most demoralizing These effects are already manifesting themselves in the work of some mem members bers of the English classes who are also students under the Professor Professor Professor Pro Pro- fessor in question Students justly feel that after having worked for several hours over a paper it at least deserves to be read and that carefully and critically critically critically cally even though the matt matter r may b be most simple and commonplace to the instructor If the Professor is so overcrowded with work as to make it impossible to toto toto toto to cri criticise all papers we believe the better plan would be to call for fewer papers and th then n read those collected do |
