Show The University Field Club THE Field Club is not an entirely new organization in the University but was perhaps never more active than atthe atthe at atthe the present time The club is composed of students in the department of geology and mineralogy and is under the direction direction direction tion of Professor Talmage and Instructor Neal As work in geology is very incomplete unless accompanied by field observation the club has been organized for the purpose of making excursions and collecting collecting collecting col col- specimens of the various products products pro pro- ducts of the territory Specimens of value are classified and preserved in the museum for future study Where the specimens cannot be easily removed photographs are taken and descriptions written The student is thus able to study geological formations not from maps alone but as they occur in nature l Mineralogical specimens may be bro brought to the University and studied in th the laboratory i Within the territory of Utah strata of nearly every geological age and a great many geological phenomena and products products products pro pro- ducts are represented In fact nearly every age is represented in Salt Lake County and within a radius of fifteen miles of the University buildings There are fossil deltas fossil as well as existing existing existing exist exist- ing lakes ice deposits fault scarps mineral springs mineral deposits and mines besides granites and all within easy reach of the University Utah is indeed a most fertile field forthe for forthe the student of geology It is also one that as yet has not received the attention attention attention atten atten- tion that i it t m merits ri ts as a consequence the work of the geologist in this region will not be that of following in the paths of others but he will constantly have the pleasure of making new discoveries discoveries discoveries dis dis- which will enrich the science The Grand Canyon of the Colorado alone might furnish the study of a lifetime to the lover of earth lore The extent and something of the history of Lake Bonneville Bonneville Bonneville Bonne- Bonne ville should be familiar to every educated educated educated edu edu- person residing in this region and especially to the teacher in the public schools Already the club have collected specimens specimens specimens mens belonging to ever every age from to recent Fossils belonging to recent epochs have been been identified and photographs of ancient deposits have been taken It will be remembered remembered remembered that last year the club showed their love for study and their power of endurance endurance endurance endur endur- ance by taking an excursion to the Great Salt Lake and remaining there for several days in the month of January This year they have had frequent Satur- Satur day excursions and so far the work has been interesting profitable and satis satis- factory This winter the club intends to pay pay ay more more ore attention to mines than they have done in the past This will be a great advantage to students of the mining sch school ol and will no doubt aid in developing developing de de- the material resources resources es o of the the coming coming state t f r |
