Show THANKSGIVING is here again We naturally think of roast turkey and plum pudding for which we ought to give thanks but how many of us think anything the origin and design of this holiday Like the purpose of other holidays of long standing the purpose for which it was established has been lost sight of to a great extent and we think only of the amusements that it brings All are familiar with the conditions that prevailed in England and Europe in the early part of the sixteenth cen cen- tury Religious freedom was being agitated but was far from being realized That they might have greater liberty the Puritans sought homes first in Holland Hoiland Hol Hoi land and finally in the New W World orId After a perilous journey across the r Atlantic they arrived at Plymouth in the early winter of 1620 During that winter they suffered great loss through gh cold cold cold- t and famine more than half their number did not live to see a New England England- summer Spring came at last The forests were we're cut down and crops of grain planted A few log ca cabins bins were built and the next autumn found them provided with plenty of grain an abundance of venison venison venison veni veni- son wild fowl and fish and shelter from the storms of winter Then it was that Thanksgiving day was established The colonists were provided with enough to supply their material needs but what they prized far above this was the privilege they had of worshiping Godas God as they saw fit Governor Bradford issued a proclamation tion settin setting g apart a day that should be ber r especially devoted to thanksgiving This nation has perpetuated the custom which was thus established The Puritan method of observing the day was perhaps very different from ours They were exceedingly pious and gave thanks by singing praises to God and engaging in prayer Perhaps many of us think that the best way to show our appreciation of the good things of life is to enjoy t them em We give thanks for fora a fat turkey by eating it That is no sin sin but we should express our thanks in other ways Those that have an abundance abundance abundance ance can praise the Creator by giving to their less fortunate neighbors The person that despises another er because he differs in religious faith can worship God by banishing the spirit of int intolerance intolerance lerance ler- ler ance from his heart and extending the hand of fellowship to all mankind If the people will so observe the day then indeed it will be one of thanksgiving z HOW are the students going to spend Thanksgiving recess Doubtless many who live out of town will go home for the first time this term The CHRONICLE CHRONICLE CHRON CHRON- ICLE wishes them a pleasant visit and hopes that they will return ready to work with renewed energy To those that remain in the city it may be said that this recess is given not that you may have time to study up for examinations examinations examinations examina examina- or anything of that sort but that you jou may have rest and come back prepared prepared prepared pre pre- pared to do efficient work Rest does not mean idleness Absence of occupation is is not lest test A mind guite quite vacant is a mind distressed Change of occupation is rest Therefore Therefore Therefore There There- fore lay aside your text-books text and engage yourselves with something else for a few days If you are fond of d dancing go goto goto goto to the Athletic Association ball on Thanksgiving eve If you like athletic sports SpOtts attend the game of football that will be played on the campus next Thursday But perhaps you do not care for such pleasures You like romance and quiet musing Then pass pass your holiday in writing stories for the CHRONICLE That would certainly be a change for some students and it would not only be a arest arest arest rest for them but perhaps a relief to the editors However the recess may be spent let it be in a way that will be invigorating to body mind and soul Then we will feel better stronger strong r and happier for having had a Thanksgiving holiday |
