| Show Athletics v THERE is one ailment with which a large number of students who ho attend the University seem to be afflicted and which must be overcome I know of not one word that exactly expresses i it t but the old patent-medicine patent phrase that tired feeling in its popular in interpretation tion does very well They simply do donot donot donot not want to do anything that requires the least exertion or effort on their part aside from the daily routine of preparation and recitation and some do donot donot donot not exert themselves to any serious extent extent extent ex ex- tent even in this direction In other institutions of a like nature it is customary for the management to provide means for the physical development develop develop- ment of the students as well as appropriate appropriate appropriate grounds for outdoor sports and amusements It may be that the sight of su successive Boards of Regents has become becom e much impaired by intense straining straining straining strain strain- in their efforts to discover ing legislative legislative legisla legisla- tive appropriations since they have all been unable to see this matter in th the same light as similar officials elsewhere but when we walk up the front stairs and visions of four thousand dollar porticos porticos porticos por por- float before us this excuse for their infirmity is dispelled After thirty years years of waiting someone among the students suddenly awoke to the fact that that- if we wanted such things thing ve we must find means to provide them and with this 1 need before us us the Athletic y t was organized It was productive of much good last year it can be much more useful this year and in future years and by perseverance small though its beginning was will its object be accomplished But to make it successful successful suc suc- the support and operation co-operation of every student is needed Many of you have not attended the University before and have not known of these things but now that you do know of them lend your support your work not merely your good wishes You may think that J 79 l f i 11 z 1 Cf Y d 1 I f t H tI Ii your effort will not help much that you are only one individual and your support support sup sup- i port or non non- support non will have little weight Do you know that there are aret t nearly five hundred students in daily f. f t attendance and that if every everyone one of those felt that way nothing would ever be accomplished Think it out for fora a minute and try to realize what an influence influence in in- r fluence five hundred students united as one can Did that ever occur to you If not think it over now and then resolve that you will hereafter be one five hundredth part of a powerful organization using its power for the common good SHALL WE HAVE A FOOTBALL TEAM As yet very little has been done toward re-organizing re our football team and if anything is is to be he accomplished ink in k that direction it is high time for someone someone someone some some- one to begin While very few of last years year's team are now attending the U University University Uni Uni- ni- ni still there is plenty of good material here now better material iny in r fact than we had last year Of last y years year's team Van Cott Kimball Stringfellow Stringfellow Stringfellow String- String fellow and Earls are all that will be here this season but the halls are full tull of powerful looking men and it would be an easy matter to pick out two or orA A three excellent teams Of course if the boys will not come out to practice nothing can be accomplished but if the effort be made to organize a team it can doubtless be done f- f The captain and the manager of last years year's team are the most at fault as everyone looks to them to make the first 2 move Wake up gentleman It is high time l. l C.
