Show S 'S Athletic j j l' l f ri di 1 1 10 o t Editor University Chronicle t r I I am sorry sony to see so little of college spirit and fraternity among the students of of the University This is to be lamented a feeling of patriotism should be introduced and encouraged for there is nothing in an institution of learning that can do so much good as true college college col col- lege spirit and enthusiasm There is nothing that can do more to increase this feeling than hearty indulgence in infield infield infield field sports by all students There is a false idea held by some that athletic and school work are not compatible with each other This however is a fallacy which has come down II through the matter of course class who jump at conclusions and make a assertions without taking time to consider whether or not they are correct It is a conceded conceded conceded con con- ceded fact that athletics have been carried carried carried car car- ried too far in some of the Eastern institutions but we rarely hear of such sucha a condition of affairs in the Western institutions There is no reason why baseball and such other games cannot be made not only pure but also a great benefit to college students It It is hard to continue four or six years in the University and retain a strong physical and mental force without taking exer eXI- cise There are many valuable lessons be learned the athletic to on field as aswell aswell aswell well as in the recitation room These games teach patience perseverance self-control self and many other qualities j which are very necessary for full d development development de- de of a strong broad minded broad minded man Now as I have said before 1 do donot donot donot not believe in carrying this athletic interest to an unreasonable extent but butI I do think it would be much better for forthe forthe I Ithe the students as well as for the University University University sity in general if there were a greater interest taken in such things here among the students The spring is now opening opening opening open open- ing up p and in fact it is upon us and w we could choose no better time than now to make some progress along this line We ought to have a good baseball baseball baseball base base- ball team second to none in the country country country coun coun- try and a tennis club and other athletic athletic athletic athle athle- tic We have plen plenty ty of material in the University for all these if the students will only take the proper interest in them The faculty will do doall doall doall all they can to encourage such sports and may do so much as to give us a field- field day for this purpose Now we should make arrangements for such an event as soon as possible Let us open up a tennis court with an energetic zeal And boys old and young let let us all get get 1 a a move on ourselves I ves II an and dd develop develop- eve I op- op the dormant resources we have for these amusements A real Ii lively vely interest in inthe inthe inthe the University would be one of the b best st advertisements we could have and let us usall usall us usall all do our best to have it Rouse yea and come out of your and let us have a healthy season eason There is no telling how much more delightful college life in the University would be if we would all take more interest in these affairs II The University is not dead but only sleeping and if she will only rouse up a little she is sure to be far more mor prosperous If we have a friend J who wants to do something great for the University let him give one or two th thousand usand dollars for a gymnasium annex and nd athletics and it will be the means of making ng the University a a more popular popular popular lar institution Lomax j |
