Show Societies THE work of the University societies is an important factor in college training Stud Students are here not simply io to make of themselves store store houses houses of information but to fit themselves for useful and active lives To assist in inthis inthis inthis this is the object for which the societies were organized The N Normal ormal Society held a meeting on OD Friday September and again last week they met This organization was begun and is continued in order that the may meet in a body discuss pedagogical subjects and prepare prepare prepare pre pre- pare themselves for work in teachers teachers' conventions and other public meetings The attendance of Normal students this year is unusually large and that fact should ensure success for their society The Delta Phi met for the first time this term on Monday evening September Septem Septem- ber The attendance of old members members members mem mem- bers was small as many of them were graduated last year and did not return But the Delta Phi boys hoys always take the best possible view of the case and instead of being discouraged they felt their individual importance the more for being few in numbers Other collegiate students were present and several applications applications applications for membership were received It is to be hoped that there will be more morein morein morein in the future The Zeta Gamma met last week but what they did has not yet been reported They They- have done right in setting their ship sailing while they have the morning breeze The ladies also have a society the Edina It is hoped that they will continue continue continue con con- the work of last year with as much energy as ever before and wi with th a larger membership Now that Utah is going into the Union with a woman suffrage clause in her constitution it is the duty ot of the women to get all the experience they can in public speaking and parliamentary parliamentary parliamentary parlia parlia- practice that they may work side by side with their brothers more in Some object object ob ob- experienced politics Some may may to this saying that when women enter into politics politics' they go a step down down- ward As well might the better class of of I Imen men hold themselves above such things an d l. l abandon government to rogues and vagabonds Anyone that will think for fora a moment can see see the terrible consequence consequence consequence conse conse- quence that would follow such a course in a republic like ours It is the better element that we want in politics and it is the duty of every citizen who is entitled entitled entitled en en- titled to take part in nominating and electing public officers officer to exercise that right and to do all in his power to preserve the honor and integrity of the nation This is not intended to be an argument in favor of woman suffrage That question has been decided now let us make the best use of present con con- The great aim of our literary and debating debating debating de de- I bating societies is not only that the members may become accustomed to public speaking but that the they may also become familiar with parliamentary usage and know how to act in all public meetings whether as officers or as members members members mem mem- bers of the assembly To acquire this ease and readiness something is needed more than simply to read the rules We must attend the society meetings and learn to apply these the e rules Then our study will be of some practical value An alumnus of the University should be ready to take his place in society but if he has done nothing outside of his class work he is only half prepared A Abit Abit Abit bit of good advice is this II Do Do not be bein bein bein in such a hurry to finish your course that you have no time for society work K c no time to write for your paper and no notime notime time for anything else except just what you have to do to be graduated I J.
