D A. A M. M Society notified us that if we would organize a team to play the High School a gold goldmedal goldmedal goldmedal medal would be given to the winners We had no organized team but the boys were called together and the eleven men showing the most willingness willing willing- ness to play were assigned positions for forthe forthe forthe the game Of these eleven eight had never seen a game of football ll before they were not in training and indeed riot not even even evenin in condition The High School team ha had been organized for a year or more and two of its members were professors who 1 had played on Eastern college teams the team was in practice and understood understood understood under under- stood the game The proposition to play was made at such a late date that we h had d just three thee days in which to practice e. e Our team went into the game certain of defeat simply because we did not want it heralded far and wide as it surely would have been that the University of Utah dared not play the High School Every man on the team was a student we wanted no professors to play our games The High School won but was was was' there any glory under the circumstances inthe in inthe inthe the victory They seemed to think so 4 for immediately there occurred a great swelling of heads if in the High School vicinity and such immense quantities of conceit filled tilled the air that passers passers-by had to cut their way through with an ax They were called the and told so often that they were equal to Yale that they actually believed it After the game the Utah was engaged engaged engaged en en- and all proceeded to celebrate this glorious victory Some time after a game was arranged for Thanksgiving day The High School went into training training training train train- ing and engaged in secret practice almost every day If anyone approached practice practice tice was suspended awaiting their departure Our team practiced three times a week the entire field being thrown open to visitors They had but buta a month in which to learn the game and the result showed that they were apt pt pupils Every very man played from start tart to finish not a single substitute being called out and yet two of them one a half-back half had a sprained ankle could not even walk without pain That our out boys would win was a foregone foregone foregone fore fore- gone conclusion so certain were they that nine of them went to the University University University sity ball the night before the game and danced until 2 o'clock in the morning but ut from the rumors of perfect interfere interference interference inter inter- fere ference ce like clock team work and revolving wedges of which the High School chool boasted we expected a close game and the result was somewhat of a disappointment It was positive cruelty for Hyde our 16 pound giant to buck their phenomenal pound center center center cen cen- ter the poor little laddie fifteen yards at t a time Hyde shame on you for picking on such a small boy Rumor has it that they did not wait until after this game to make preparations preparations preparations to celebrate but engaged the Utah about ten days beforehand Did anyone see them occupy it We claim no honor for the victory we want no praise but we are sick and disgusted over the false reports which are being spread about the enormous difference in weight and age between the two teams teams- a difference which exists only in imagination Now High School team since you have conceded that you are laddies and children hereafter play with children Dont Don't tackle Ii giants Our pound juniors are making a record if you are arel l looking oking for glory try them a few times L.
