Show Normal Society Meets at WE E have noticed the above announcement announcement announcement an an- on the main bulletin every Friday since school opened and to get some idea of the work being done by the Normal Society this year we have of late been attending the meetings quite regularly Recognizing that first impressions are apt to be unreliable unreliable un un- relia reliable le we were were at the first meeting we attended a silent observer On the succeeding Friday afternoon we were attracted by the announcement of ofa a lecture A resume of that meeting will answer our purpose The officers in their places order was called and the preliminary business gone through with The lecturer was was about ready to take the floor when someone in the back part of the room arose Mr Chairman or by the way M Miss ss as the chairman is a lady I Iwas Iwas Iwas was absent last time and would like to tobe tobe tobe be excused The necessary motion to excuse the gentleman was carried and the president began to announce the lecture when from another quarter of the room came a feminine voice Miss President I would like to tobe tobe tobe be excused for my absence last meeting I was unable to attend For the space of thirteen seconds there was silence then the gallant secretary came cameto cameto cameto to the rescue Miss President I move we excuse the lady The motion was no sooner carried when a half-dozen half were on their feet clamoring for the floor The half-back half on the football L r team of course received the preference Miss 1 Chairman I also was absent last meeting I had an engage engage And thus for more than seven times it went wenton on and on-and and the great western sun SUll a dazzling dazzling oj ing ball of autumnal splendor sank smiling behind the western hills and t when his last ray retreated mockingly across the floor there seemed to be at a aleast least seven eYen times seven seyen others on the floor with the same Id Id I'd like to be excused excused excused ex ex- words in their mouths The lecturer evidently thought it some special parliamentary exhibition for his benefit and tried to appreciate the courtes courtesy The CHRONICLE scribe honestly thought it some huge joke and was just going to laugh when the great seriousness of those taking part struck him and he refrained And now a II subdued gloom of after i sunset filled all the room and the person moving to go on wi with th the program program program pro pro- gram made himself heard The lecturers lecturer's lecturers lecturer's lecturers lecturer's lec lec- topic was appropriate It was The Observance of Trifles The lecture had proceeded for some sometime sometime sometime time and the scribes scribe's mind was wandering wandering wander wander- ing from the lecturers lecturer's topic He was thinking that if called upon to address the society how nicely he could thank them for the great honor and how cleverly he could commend their observance observance observance vance of trifles in extending such a courtesy to a person of such small 1 renown as himself He was interrupted in his reverie by the squeaking shoes falling books and slamming doors which always accompany a persons person's attempt to gracefully withdraw from a room in which exercises are being con con- ducted The scribe took this occurrence occurrence occurrence occur occur- S rence as a special warning to himself to pay attention He immediately curbed his wandering thoughts and was becoming becoming becoming becom becom- ing intensely interested in the lecturers lecturer's exhortation to know thyself when again those footsteps and opening and closing doors The lecturer looked annoyed the scribe was uncomfortable 3 and was contemplating the very evident lack of courtesy and gross ross inattention to trifles trifles when when the outer door again creaked on its hinges and three young ladies passed out And when the subdued subdued subdued sub sub- dued gloom faded into partial darkness the interruptions were all the more frequent frequent frequent fre fre- quent for the dimly outlined forms stumbling across the room and out the thedoor thedoor KJ door gave small clues to identities Not even the hearty motion at the close lo to thank the lecturer for his interesting and instructive lecture could make amends for this extreme impoliteness F. F At the meeting last Friday there was the same anno annoying ing feature and the fr t. t CHRONICLE is forced to the conclusion that it is a regular feature of Normal i meetings Inquiries as to the probable causes brought out the fact that a large number of Normal members reside outside outside outside out out- side of the city and that to reach their residences they must catch cars that leave town before the adjournment of their meetings also that many of the members are too tired Friday afternoon to remain during the whole program Both seem to be natural causes and we suggest that if the Normal is to remain our most flourishing society not only the time but the day of meeting will have to be changed |
