Show Board oi Education Meets to Hear, Act Upon County School Problems As the result of an inquiry from the Escalante Valley Coordinating Coor-dinating Council about the cost of using school facilities for community com-munity functions, the Iron County Coun-ty board of education has instructed in-structed Superintendent Ianthus Wright to make a thorough study of the costs of use of the buildings, build-ings, after which a definite policy pol-icy and schedule will be adopted. The action was taken at the regular reg-ular meeting of the board of education edu-cation Monday, after Mrs. Ruby Anderson, chairman of the education edu-cation committee of the Kscal-ante Kscal-ante Valley group had requested request-ed the information. The board has favored use of the school buildings for various community functions, both educational edu-cational and social, and in the past a small rental lor functions that were strictly of a community communi-ty nature has been charged to cover the cost of heat, light and janitor service. When the study of costs is completed the board will set a definite policy and rental fee for such use of the buildings. At the meeting the board also approved the attendance of English Eng-lish teachers at a national convention, con-vention, approved the improvements improve-ments at the Paragonah school, purchase of equipment for the Tarowan high school mechanical arts department, and authorized the re-wiring- of the shop at the Cedar City high school for installation in-stallation of additional equipment. equip-ment. The board approved sending five English teachers from the schools of Iron County to the annual an-nual national convention of Teachers of English, to be held at Los Angeles on Nov. 2G, 27 and 28. The board members feel that it is an opportunity for local teachers to Denefit from instructions to be given at the convention since it is being held so close to Iron County. Also the School Survey Commission of Utah has indicated that some strengthening of the English de-parments de-parments would be advisable, and this together with the fact that emphasis is being made on the teaching of language arts this year, prompted the board to take advantage of the Los Angeles An-geles meetings. The teachers to attend will be selected by the principals of the various schools. Mrs. Lowe Barton and Mrs. David Dalton, representatives of the Paragonah Parent-Teachers Association, met with the board to request certain improvements at the Paragonah school. First they asked that a portion of the playground area be oil surfaced, second that the district cooperate with the P-TA in purchasing a duplication machine, and third that a new curtain oe purchased for the stage in the recreation hall of the Paragonah school. The board reported that the oil surfacing program had already been approved and would be done as soon as material and workmen could be found. The P-TA representatives volunteered to help locate workmen to do the job, and this offer was accepted ac-cepted by the board. The organization organi-zation also agreed to pay half the cost of a duplicating machine, ma-chine, and the board agreed to pay the other half. The recreation hall is being repainted, and the ladies asked that the purchase of a new curtain for the stage be undertaken now to complete the redecoration of the hall. The board requested the superintendent superinten-dent to determine the type of material neded for this and the cost, after which action will be taken on the request. The board also approved the purchase of new equipment for the mechanical arts department of the Parowan high school. The addition to the Parowan school building has increased the room available for this department and new farm and automotive mechanics me-chanics equipment is now needed. need-ed. New equipment will be added add-ed at a cost of approximately $1,000. The board approved the re-wiring of. the Cedar high school shop to provide for (he installation installa-tion of arc welding equipment. The equipment is already in the possession of the school, but the present wiring is not adequate for its use. Superintendent Wright reported report-ed at the meeting that a new teacher had been added to the Parowan elementary school staff making it possible to have first grade students attend full time, instead of just for a half day as has been done since school opened in September. Tony Dalton, Dal-ton, graduate of the College of Southern Utah, has been employed employ-ed as fourth grade teacher, and Mrs. Louise Mortensen has been moved from the fourth to the second sec-ond grade, relieving Mrs. Zona Topham for duty in the first grade. Under this program Mrs. Topham and Mrs. Fae Benson will teach the two first grades on a full time basis. Until now Mrs. Benson has been teaching both grades in the school on a half day basis for each. The superintendent also reported report-ed that Parent-Teacher Associations Associa-tions of Parowan had asked for the privilege of arranging an open house at the new high school building which is nearing completion. The event is tentatively tenta-tively scheduled for Friday, evening, eve-ning, Oct. 30. |
