Show University Students and Music Musi IN noting the demise of the Glee Club as announced in the CHRONICLE not long since my mind ran over the general condition of things musical in connection with University students Vast as have been the strides music has taken in the community and in the school life of our Territory during the past ten years it is by no means yet in such an established condition as its nature demands or as to make it a part of the life and soul of student associations associations associations and singing clubs or societies in connection with any school will not be granted life insurance until it is Farther than as a study where it is graciously admitted as second cousin to the so called practical studies it is held as asa a a menial fit only for servi servi- tude Like the kings king's fool a something to amuse to be listened to on various various' occasions to ser serve e as seasoning I to many a dish otherwise too tasteless for even yen even students who for the time being in inthe the grand gland scramble for learning ar are willing to swallow many in in order to complete the course Many things perhaps never more called in into to requisition tion in the pursuit of life and happiness not not because of their uselessness but because the student having loved them not they could afford him no nourishment As a servant to that extent music is isa a success I admit but her true place i is a companion anion and as such only will she remain steadfastly with us and fulfill her noble mi mission sion He who listens only does not know the true charm and meaning of music Only when you have ie uttered an emotion of joy sadness love longing only when you have felt this emotion bubbling from the heart to the voice or lips and there vent it itself itself itself it- it self in melody even if it be only whistled you you have have learned the charm of mu music ic Until then you have been as the speechless who with hearing unimpaired unimpaired unimpaired paired had not the gift of speech either in voice or gesture Students when your emotional feel feelings feelings feel feel- ings are cultivated in their most holy and pure form your love for each other your pleasure in associating together in the pursuit of f learning learning- learning that has a fascination and charm for you you and and you form the habit of giving vent to these emotional feelings feelings feelings feel feel- ings in song as the birds do when the sunshine gladdens them after a shower then will music become a part of your school life the garland that will entwine and bind together lifes life's memories those memories those of dear old old happy school Sing more and listen less Let Let- music come forth from your hearts more and be poured into the ears less Lift her up from the degradation of constantly s serving to amuse and make her her the companion of your holiest and noblest thoughts and she will repay you by transforming ing you you into still nobler beings than you are today Then will a a. a song refresh yo you you when studies have m made md d you wea weary Y then will you find finda n l a a a half an hour spent spen in singing together every few few days as necessary and nd beneficial as your daily food then will you find singing an an exercise with its lung throat heart and mind action sending the young youngblood youngblood b. b blood blood- coursing through the veins refreshing refreshing re re- fr freshing shing soul as well as body as no mere muscular or bodily recreation can do leaving a relish relis for more knowledge and a keener desire to use it for the benefit of yo your our r men fellow to to spur you onward to greater and more mor effective efforts t I Some one has said that to cultivate the heart as well as the head is is the great need of modern education The heart cannot be cultivated without emotion Music is the language of emotion So here is t the ekey e key to what we want Boys and girls sing more and listen less As As' to college glee clubs in the ordinary form we need none I trust Even here music assumes her rightful right right- ful position though in a degrading form the nonsensical college song is the expression of unbridled over berance of mirthful emotions too often aroused by wine wine or rattle-brained rattle mis mis- loving chief-loving youth I believe in mirth good and hearty but the best is not all froth and I believe our young men as asa asa a a. rule are such as demand mirth born of something worth singing or laughing about Hence in my judgment we need but few so-called so college songs and college college college col col- lege clubs to sing them but we do need a better sort of both and while as I have already stated I anticipate n no great success until music attains her proper place I trust the young men will bravely continue attempting and not give it up until they with other mU music ic lovers lover have accomplished this Utah tah is in many respects already to 10 the front in music Let her schools maintain maintain maintain main main- tain her there and her University her University lead always t t i I E.
