Show AS A S we study the lives of the ancient t Greeks Greeks' and Romans and not note their occupations and customs there is nothing nothing noth noth- V ing that attracts and interests u us more than their festivals and games celebrated celebrated celebrated cele cele- in honor of the gods and for the the glory of their race There were contests contests contests con con- tests in oratory in poetry in running wrestling boxing chariot racing etc Strength of mind and body was put to the test in every known manner Men were willing to spend years in careful tr training ining in III order that they might win the prize and be known among their fellows as having attained special excellence excellence excellence excel excel- lence in some particular line That same spirit is within us today We sometimes say that a a specified prize is a a poor poor goal for which to to s strive ive and that that it t de develops elo a a am m mean i n f O 3 0 O 00 o ambition biti n but but are re we not all striving for prizes every day of our lives Is it not benefit and distinction in particular lines that ever leads us on and us to put forth greater and more persistent effort The best of us work for prizes and everything that induces induces' us to develop our powers and work on lines parallel but outside of the regular room class topics gives us a broader education and makes us stronger men and women Two or three citizens of Salt Lake whose modesty forbids the mention of names have manifested their interest in inthe inthe inthe the University and their love for classic learning by offering fifty dollars to be given in two equal prizes in the Latin and Greek department for the year 1894 5 LATIN To that thi student of the Latin department department department depart depart- ment mentho who vho attains the greatest ex excellence excellence excel excel- el- el lence in his or her regular class r room class om work for the year and in an essay in Latin on the Roman republic a prize of twenty-five twenty dollars is offered The essay should consist of about five hundred words and be handed to the professor assistant-professor of Latin on or before before before be be- fore May 1st 1 st 1895 GREEK To that student in the Greek department department department depart depart- ment who attains the greatest excellence in his or her regular room class-room wor work for the year and in an examination in Greek literature a prize of twenty-five twenty dollars is offered The examination will be held at at the University May 1st 1895 |
