Show THE UNI UNIVERSITY OF UTAH Our University is the pride of the people people people peo peo- of of Utah The early settlers well understood understood understood un un- the importance of a head to our educational system and as early as 1851 an Act was passed by the Legislature es establishing establishing establishing es- es the University of Deseret Many of the present citizens do not und understand understand un un- d the difficulties which have obstructed the growth of this school and yet the good that it has done to the youth of this Territory is little less than mar mar- It must be understood that for many years the people of Utah were al almost almost almost al- al most in a state of abject poverty It was simply a struggle for the people to exist In the face of all this the University grew departments were added and the courses extended As the Territory increased in wealth the schools shared the prosperity In the light of all the facts we think there is little room for criticism The early regents labored earnestly earnestly earnestly ear ear- nestly foi for the good of this institution They even advanced from their own purses money to place the present U University University Uni Uni- niI ni- ni I v sity building in a condition for use and members of the Faculty did without their salaries for a time that its doors might not be closed It is well for the present students not to forget these facts or depreciate in any way the worthiness of the men who have had so much to do with making the University wh what t it is to Let the students ever hold in highest esteem such men as Dr Park and Professors Toronto Howard and Paul That the U University may still continue to grow demands first ample financial i. i support second efficiency and harmony in our school system A university cannot cannot cannot can can- not ordinarily be built up in a few years it requires a long time and the support of ofa a comparatively large population While our population is not sufficient to support a university that will compare with many of the Eastern institutions yet if supported supported supported sup sup- ported by the entire community there is no reason why the University of Utah should not be all ali its name indicates The fact that a preparatory school is attached to the University has evoked criticism The clamor has been raise the standard How gladly would the Regents and Faculty Faculty Fac Fac- close the doors s against every preparatory preparatory preparatory atory student if they could see ample means of having students supplied for for the University courses without the institutions institution's institutions institution's institutions institution's tion's doing part of its own preparatory work Indeed it has been but recently that some of the leading State universities ties of the East have been able to dispense dispense dispense dis dis- pense with their preparatory schools We understand a meeting of county I superintendents and leading school menis men men- menis j jis is soon oon to be called for the express purpose purpose pur- pur pose of discussing such matters as will secure a closer relation of the University with the other schools of the Territory It has pleased us of late to notice among even private schools a disposition to work in harmony with the University We hope the result of this meeting will be bethe bethe the linking of our schools into a system w forming one chain the terminating link being the University of Utah the head j of our entire school system J |
