Show Nr F LITERARY Jt Thanksgiving Day in 2093 THE following was recently reproduced from a phonograph sent by a young lady attending school in New York to her friend in San Francisco Hello Penelope I I am just back from a visit to my gr grandfather in Salt Lake City Oh I had such a delightful time Cousin and I had very pressing pressing pressing press press- ing invitations to attend a family reunion reunion reunion re re- union such as they used to have in inthis inthis inthis this country two hundred years ago We had not had a vacation for a long longtime longtime longtime time so decided tat we would go for a afew afew t few days The journey is so tedious We left New York by the first chamber in the Trans-Continental Trans Transportation Cylinder Cylinder Cylinder der at 6 a. a am a.m. m. m and arrived in Salt Lake City at 1220 12 20 Grandpa was there with his electric carriage and we were wheeled through that ancient city with its old- old fashioned story one-story bricks to grandpas grandpa's residence on the east bench After lunch we went for a ride on the bench and visited the ruins of an old fort This fort was at one time a United States military post and the plateau upon which it stands is now called Douglas Heights after the old fort formerly named Fort Douglas There are some very lovely ly residences ces on these heights From here one can view the lake and the old Mormon Temple that was forty years in building building building build build- ing standing out above the tops of the buildings grand and majestic We spent the evening with our cousins cousins cousins ins indulging in games and dancing and went to bed with our minds full of the stories our grandfather would be sure f n l to tell us the next day To be sure there have been books written upon the customs customs customs cus cus- toms of the people in the earl early history of our country but it is such a bore to tobe tobe tobe be compelled t to o read books We were up early the next morning and took a trip around the city where we visited some friends and saw many strange relics of the past among which t z was was a car that they used tu to run by electricity electricity elec elec- F but the power was transmitted over a wire instead of the storage system Y we now have We had been enjoined i inot not to be later than two o'clock so we fi felt that we must not keep grandma waiting and reached the house on time Oh what a sight met our eyes when J we came into the dining There i stood a long table with a lovely white linen cover cloth-cover on it In the center x f were dishes of fruit and here and there r- r bottles of spicy sauces plates containing containing containing contain contain- ing a white spongy substance called bread which by the way is a not good t to eat unless covered over with another subs substance ance called butter made from cows cow's i milk I I had never seen such a sight before u We were all seated about the table 11 rt y and grandpa served each one with a art plate of fowl called turkey He told us that these birds were at one time domesticated and kept for food but that for years they had been wild and had to be hunted for this dinner We were entertained by grandfather with stories stones about everything that was placed before us and when you think of the strides made in science you you willmore will willmore more readily in imagine lagine how very interesting interesting interesting interest interest- ing these stories were He told us that in former days that thatis is years ago the people were compelled compelled compelled com com- to prepare every meal just as this one had been It seems very strange does it not how they ever got along But I suppose they imagined they were living in luxury Just think of giving up p our food as we have it in these days and eating with knives and forks I I could not begin to tell you of all the things we had to eat but when I Itell Itell Itell tell you that it took two hours to eat it you can imagine what sort of a dinner we hadIt hadIt had It It was so funny to watch each other use knives and forks we were so clumsy I I have to get out my cylinders and get my lesson so I will save what more I have to tell you until the next time Good In the time when this young lady lives the United States is still a government government government govern govern- ment but has annexed Canada Mexico all of South America and the Pacific Islands For nearly years the world has been supplied with food manufactured manufactured t red directly from the elements a discovery discovery discovery dis dis- covery made years before but only perfected about years They travel from N New ew York to San Francisco in inless inless inless less than twelve hours in Pneumatic Cylinders and electricity has made such rapid advances advance that carriages are propelled propelled propelled pro pro- with it and in consequence horses 1 i iare are no longer used They do not write books now but when an author wishes to give the people J the benefit of his thoughts though ts he speaks them into the phonograph and they are then reproduced indefinitely A Among the other things which science has given to the world are the perpetual perpetual perpetual per per- motion to a small extent aluminum aluminum aluminum num for residences and ships and many other things which were we're were hardly thought f of years ago i R.
