| Show may AN AN observer in the library and in the halls might have noticed last week that many students were deeply interested interested interested inter inter- ested with certain little stencilled manur manuscripts manu- manu f r scripts with broad margins and of very t t- as neat execution 4 These seemed to be even of greater v s r interest than the latest faculty bulletins and the editor at least was curious to toI I know what they contained They rhey proved I t to be syllabi provided by one of the ther r f professors to help his class in preparing 1 for examination They contained a av aw w v complete skeleton of statements embracing em- em f 11 bracing all the important facts of the ther r Yr subject Of for all the world like those in inh h 4 t the e backs of of oil l geographies an and d the thes Y s students who had them were racing Vii through the neatly arranged columns f. f just as the editor remembers having f Milk it done when a boy at school This kind of work is given to junior k r students and we are told that it is considered about the right thing in institutions of far greater reputation i than ours If this is true it would t appear that in some respects at least education has not progressed very much tL i 2 hM in the last few centuries after all One would he safe in saying that most of these students with the aid of their syllabi will be able to pass pas's pass examination examination examination examina examina- tion fairly well and one would be just justas justI I as safe in saying that none of them who stud study in this manner will carry away with them any great b benefit from their study But what is true and more deplorable is that if there are any wise enough and independent enough to to- throw throwaway away this rubbish and apply themselves diligently to the subject subject subject sub sub- they may not pass the examination at all Is there any wonder that students students students stu stu- dents crave for examinations when such sucha a premium is put upon that atrocious practice Is there any wonder that so many students leave college wholly unfitted unfitted unfitted un un- fitted for active life when their success in in college depends entirely upon their being able to answer a certain number of set questions at the end of each course All students should unite in a war of extermination against examinations Let each one pass honestly on his record record record re re- cord or not at all 4 |
