Show TALMAGE MADE PRESIDENT Montgomery Resigns Aber and White Leaven Leave Other Important Changes A Endowment THE meeting ol of the Board of Regents held yesterday at the Dire Directors Directors' Room of the Deseret National Bank was the most important one that has been held for many years The meeting has been looked forward to with the most intense interest for changes of reaching far-reaching importance were universally expected Aside from the election of a President it was known that financial difficulties would necessitate the removal of two or three men and natural enough all have been anxiously awaiting to see who these men would be The Regents too felt the importance of the meeting so all were there except Col Donnellan and Mr Daly The two new Regents Mr Thatcher of Logan and Mr Wilson of Provo came to Salt Lake to he be present and both took great interest in the proceedings The recommendations of the Advisory Committee consisting of Mr Cannon chairman Mr Van Cott and Mr Pierce were first read and action was then taken on them The most important affair of the meeting was the election of Dr James E. E Talmage Tamage to the Presidency This was not wholly unexpected for the CHRONICLE of last week cont contained ned the announcement that it was altogether J likely that he would be made President In addition to this position Dr Talmage will also fill the chair of geology and mineralogy with a salary of pe per perl s J year Prof Kingsbury who for the past two t years has been Acting President will return to his old position namely Professor Professor Professor Pro Pro- fessor of Chemistry and Phy Physics ics He was elected Vice Vice President President of the University Uni Uni- a a rather unnecessary position but created for Prof Kingsbury as a amark amark amark mark of respect and as a testimonial of the faithful and efficient services which he has rendered the institution His salary will be slightly in excess of the theother theother theother other professors but has not yet been definitely fixed He will continue in his present position until July 1st when President-elect President Talmage will take charge The resignation of Prof Montgomery tendered to the Reg Regents a short time ago was accepted Where the Professor sor will go nex next year is not known but it is not at all likel likely that he will have any trouble in obtaining another tion Of course it was necessary for forthe j the Regents to make retrenchments 4 y somewhere so it was decided after due deliberation and all things considered that Professor Aber and Mr White be dismissed Mr Cummings who has hast t been an instructor in Latin for the past L year will take Professor Abers Aber's place with the title of Assistant Professor of Ancient Languages He will no doubt be elevated ele to a professorship if his services next year are satisfactory The x departure of Mr White will be much regretted by the students with whom he has been a great favorite All of r. r the men who leave will receive letters r. r of commendation for their past service 4 from the Secretary of the Board of Regents With the abolishment of the Military Department which occurred f some time ago Wright of course r fi loses his position tion V T C. C We have now to relate the most J J munificent gift which the University has ever received The Salt Lake Literary and Scientific Association o has hast t endowed a chair of geology and mineralogy mineralogy mIneralogy minera minera- mInera- mInera logy with sixty thousand dollars All the apparatus and fixtures in the Church University building valued at has been given to our University by this Association 6 In addition to this we also have the use of the the entire building building build build- ing free of charge which is in close proximity and easy approach to the one in which we now are The collection of apparatus spoken of is undoubtedly the largest and finest in the intermountain moun inter tain region and experts traveling through here have pronounced it perfect in every particular Forty five thousand thousand thousand thou thou- sand dollars in clear cash make up the balance Just when this money will be handed over to the University is unknown unknown unknown un un- known but until such time 1800 will willbe willbe willbe be annually given The Association reserves the right to make appointments to the chair subject of course to the confirm confirmation tion of the Regents The papers relative to the matter are now in inthe inthe inthe the hands of eminent attorneys and everything will be completed in in a few days days Thus the election of a President the action taken with regard to the outgoing professors and the acceptance of the princely gift serve to make the meeting of the Regents yesterday an important landmark in the history of the sity They commenced their duties last March with seemingly insuperable bar bar- But they have met the gravest responsibilities with even mind and will no doubt prove themselves equal to any J and every emergency |
