Show Boy Scouts Hold Sectional Camp At Navajo Lake Some 500 boy scouts began to make camp yesterday at Navajo Lake as the Southwest Section-. Section-. al Camp got underway. The camp runs from July 20 through July 23, and includes scouts from the districts of Des-,eret, Des-,eret, Cedar Breaks, Beaver, Millard. Mil-lard. Escalante Valley, Zion Park, Kanab and Snow's Canyon. The camp is also open on an invitational invita-tional basis to other districts in the council. Officially opening yesterday at 1 p. m., the scouts began to make camp at Scout Spring on the shore of the lake across from Navajo lodge. Gordon Williams, district com-missioner, com-missioner, is the director of the entire camp. The four day affair Is under the supervision of John L. Cross, field representative, Utah Parks Council. Additional men on the staff conducting the camp are Theron Ashcroft, district dis-trict committee member; Otto Fife, camping activities chairman; chair-man; Frank Farnsworth, senior scout commissioner, Beaver district, dis-trict, and Albert Albertson, council coun-cil vice president. Purpose of the camp this year is to "Strengthen the Arm of Liberty". Scouts will compete on a Patrol basis in the various scouting events. Points toward .awards will be scored on Patrol organization, Patrol camp, knife and hatchet, fire building, cook-lng, cook-lng, first aid, nature trail and compass course. All scouts participating in the camporee are registered 2nd Class, and all activities at the camp are based on the re-aligned 2nd Class requirements. This includes fire building, signaling, scout oath and laws, cooking, safety, first aid, camping and a savings or farm animal account. A campfire program was held last night, with a presentation being given by each district represented. rep-resented. Tonight there is a mass parade in Cedar City of all the scouts at the camp. Friday evening there will be a Council campfire, at which time awards will be given. The camp will break up Saturday at 11:30 a. m. |
