Show SOME of the Eastern colleges are making settlements for the purpose of disseminating a spirit of refinement and culture in quarters which cannot be reached by the ordinary methods This is encouraging It shows show's that there is isa a strong tendency to break down the barriers of exclusiveness which have always existed to a greater or less extent marking out college men as a distinct class It is coming to be recognized that education has its duties that to a great extent t the able men in a community community community com com- are responsible for the condition of the the p people ople as a whole an and that so long as misery and want and crime exist there is a work to be done for which the educated al alone ne are fitted This movement we take it will mark marka a new epoch in reform When all educated educated educated edu edu- classes unite to oppose wrong and alleviate suffering the day of the crank will end But under present conditions it is not strange that the latter should be continually COInIng coming forward with his t rj wild schemes So long as all reform movements are left to the Salva Salvation tion t Army the Bible Societies and like institutions we can expect nothing else not that preaching and Bibles are not good in their way but because such means must always prove u useless eless so long as the material conditions of the lower classes remain un unalleviated alleviated This being true college men engaged in reform reform reform re re- form work should bear in mind that while alleviation of actual suffering is a necessary part of the work of reform the greater work must be in searching out the causes of existing evils and the best way to remove these causes These movements and others of like nature on the part of college men are part of the new crusade which has for its object nothing less than the unity of the race as one brotherhood d. d Many who themselves take part in these movements perhaps do not fully realize their import import im im- V f port as in all great movements many iz C of the forces at work are blind forces But such is the destiny of mankind and every united effort founded upon truly altruistic principles hastens by so much i the final complete unity God speed I the good work |
