The birds were purchased from Claude Hooke, famous upland gome bird raiser at Napa, California, Price paid by the state was $4.00 a bird. -The birds will be kept at the Carbon county game bird farm through the winter, and in the spring the ntate hopes to accumulate enough chicks to maintain, an adequate ade-quate broodstock for future planting. plant-ing. Mr. Hooke, the spokesman stated has offered to assist In the plant- ' ings. He has assisted In game bird stocking throughout most of the United States. He warned the Utah game officials, however, that these special-bred eold-weather partridges must not be planted near habitation habita-tion and should have feed the first week they are out until they are able to make for themselves. Mr. Hook explained that sometimes some-times Chukars will wander 10 to 20 miles from where they are planted plant-ed so no one would expect to locate lo-cate them In the area in which they started. They will migrate to the land and environment which suits them best. He said that Wisconsin Wis-consin planted Reeves pheasants several years ago and these were never found until this year when they turned up miles from the place where they were planted. This is not the first attempt at Chukar planting in Utah, the game department spokesman said. Other attempts have been unsuccessful at least, the birds planted have never nev-er been located. |
