Show f The accompanying accompanying- cut shows the record made by the seismograph maintained by th the department of geology at the University of I the earthquake waves which reached Salt Lake City rec recently There are good r reasons for believing that the disturbance was somewhat somewhat somewhat some some- what local in nature Records of seismic activity made at long distances from the 1 place of origin always show sho the arrival of well defined preliminary tremors at times several minutes ahead of the principal waves but in this case they are practically absent I It t will be noted that the recording needle was traveling traveling- along in a straight line in the direction indicated by the arrow and that at exactly 11 1140 40 p. p m. m the first impulse of the waves caused a faint vibration of the pendulum Less than one minute later the principal vibrations arrived in full strength After this series of waves had passed a short period of comparative re prevailed J i a 1 t k 1 I Then without a note of warning another series somewhat more intense than the first caused the pendulum to vibrate violently For more than an hour thereafter the needle was in a constant state of agitation The western face of the Wasatch monni mountains mountains moun moun- i marks the position of one of the most profound escarpments s yet discovered by byman byman byman man the total displacements aggregating fully feet Slipping is to some extent still common along this plane and it is like that the waves which reached us Sunday night were propagated by a slight movement movement move move- I ment t at some point along this path The records made by the seismograph show that the waves reached here along a south north-south line The disturbance was so slight that there is no reason to believe that it could have been detected by individuals even though they had been watching for it |
