Show Social Security Director Corrects False Impression Tremendous increases in employment employ-ment and consequent migration ol workers has caused a greater number num-ber of mfcsing persons to be sought by their families, and through a mistaken impression many appeals are made to the Social Security Board for aid in. locating the missing mis-sing ones, it was announced today by Harry E. Johnson, Manager of the Richfield field office for th.-Board. th.-Board. "Due to the complexities of keeping keep-ing In order the 66 million account numbers in Baltimore, now on file for workers and employers, and the laws governing the administration of the Social Security Act, the Information In-formation concerning a person covered cov-ered by provisions of the Social Security Se-curity Act Is considered confidential confiden-tial and may be revealed only in certain pres:ribed situations. "Many persons are under the impression im-pression that missing relatives can be traced by the Social Security Board, but this is not the case. The ' regulations do not permit disclosure of Information concerning Board records except In specific cases. Such cases must be for use only in connection with the administration of the Old-Age and Survivors' Insurance In-surance Program, Unemployment compensation, and Public Assistance Programs. Missing persons .should be located through police, private welfare wel-fare or travellers' aid bureaus. "Social Security account number cards are ufed in connection with the posting of wage credits to the account number holder, and should not be accepted by banks or merchants mer-chants as identification of individuals indivi-duals seeking to secure cash or merchandise mer-chandise on checks or orders. The Social Security Board warns all nongovernmental non-governmental agencies or individuals indivi-duals that use of the account number num-ber cards for any purpose other than that prescribed by law Is who-ly who-ly without authorization." |
