Show mr NEW COAL ROAD NEARLY FINI FINISHED S r hea one of tho the biggert engineering teals feats and one of the tile most expensive pieces of railroad construction irin in utah that part of tho the utah railway allway It com panya line between castle gate onto and tho coal fields of carbon county ia in rapidly nearing completion and Is expected cited to be ready for business not later than september according to win will ashton vico vice president and chief engineer of the company ac no cording to mondays salt lake tribune the tile link between thistle and pio vo fc portion of which if now in ilao as a second track by the denver As rio orando grande railroad will probably be put into service about the same time by a joint arrange ment between the tile utah railway company and the A sr R G company from thistle to castle gate the tile utah railway company will be prepared to take care of at berst three 0 odthe f the carbon county mines in the movement of the winter supply of coal the original ial intent of tho tile builders build cra of the road waa wac to ac serve rye the mines of the castle vailey I 1 coal company the black hawk coal company and the consolidated fuel campay and other companies located about 25 miles m iles southeast of price about 3 at years ars ago the southern utah railroad was built between the coal fields of carbon county and price to serve these mines but it was oon found that the road could not tako take care of the output and the utah railway company was incorporated to construct a line between tho the mines and provo the survey of the apropo proposed d route practically paralleled the line 0 c tho denver rio grande from provo to castle gate where it diverged through the rough country to the mines this brought about negotiations relative rela tivo to a joint traffic arrangement ran gement between the two companies with the result that it was wait decided to construct the twenty seven miles between catle gate rate and the mines minos another link of twenty miles between thistle ind provo an and d temporarily at least use the tracks of the D R 0 from castle gate to thistle jointly under the some agreement the track of the utah railway company from provo to thistle is to be used as a second rack by the denver ario rio grande company according aw to the present plans the denver rio grande company will operate the entire road as it doea does the southern utah at the present time the new line is 13 intended for the very ver heaviest clasa alasa of traffic and has been constructed dt enormous ex pense the grading alone in some instances costing more than per mile the track is laid with 90 pound steel and the bridges are of all steel construction the section of the line between catitti gate and the mines represents an expenditure of more than about fourteen miles of this link has ha been completed the grading of the remainder of tills this section is is expected to be finished in july and ready for service in september the engineering work on the line through the rough country from castle casus gate to mohrland Mol irland is a distinct continued on page three W COAL L Y FINIS continued from rom pago page ono feature fea tur and though calling for au ai imin cose outlay the result more than justifies the expense the remarkable engineering feat is tho the construction of the track so tint that it is either elthor down grade or level from the tho mines to the denver rio gradde connection thus lowering the operating enting op expense to the minimum under such condition conditions it is possible tu to tring as many loaded cars from the mines as can bo be handled safely with the engine engines braking power the greatest grade from castle gate to the tile mince mines ie Is 2 per cent and that only in a few instances the grade has been so calculated as to allow an engine to handle as many errity cars to the mines as it can oan handle loads from thorn them making tho traffic take cre of itself the denver rio grande company estimates that with one of its mallet engines it can handle seventy five loads in each train from blob mohrland rland aad seventy five empties on the return trip the utah railway company recently placed an order gr all steel pounds capacity coal cars for its own use no order for power has been placed up to this time the rio grande company being depended depond ed upon to furnish all that may bo be required in th tint thit it line the coal cars ordered represent an expenditure of more than half a million dollars in anticipation of added transportation facilities the coal companies hav have been making improvements improvement for itter increased eased output at the mia mine which when completed will mean the loading of approximately cars per day according to the estimates four trains each way will handle the empties and the days output between mohrland and castle gate but the movement of these cars between castle gate and thistle is another proposition especially from castle gate to soldier summit on tho the denver rio grande between the latter pointe is a steep grade and tho the average train consists of about thirty loads thus making an increase of ten ton trains daily up the mountain the est estimate imato of loads daily may also be increased if some of the other coal companies in the field decide to connect up with the new road tho the standard coal coet company has opened a now mine in spring canyon and it Is probable that it AS is well as tho the knight coal company mav decide to take advantage of the additional transportation facilities to provide for the greatest possible output the castle valley coal company constructed a new tipple last year the black hawk company is arranging for similar improvements this year and the consolidated fuel company will mike it its improvements luring 1915 the standard coal company has erected a concrete tipple of the latest model and it is arranged to load box as well as coal gars something unusual in this part of the country N J rabensburg the harness barness maker returned tuesday morning from a five weeks visit at his old home in texas during Us lis absence he
