Show H THE DIG PROBLEM. WITHOUT question tho moat im- --. ' portant problem that confronts H the people of rural communities off H tho railroad, is that of good ronda H roads nuitable for wagon nnd automo- H bile travel and Iron county Ik no cx- Hj cuption to this rule. The budget of H claims which come before the commix- H xioners at their monthly hcshIoiih are H much more than half for the construc- Hj tion, maintenance and repair of the H highways, and yet it seems that only H slow progress is being made in the H improvement -of our roads, and for H every need that is met a dozen cry B aloud for attention. In all this de- Hj mand and with only a limited supply H of means available it is no easy task H for the Commissioners to apportion H the money to meet the most urgent H needs without overstepping the re- H sources and having to impose on oth- H cr funds; for while ihero is no nrguc- H ment against the importance of good H roads, and it is freely admitted that B money expended on the roads is well H spent, yet there arc some other mat- H - ters within the county that must have H means to maintain them. H Modena is calling for road improve- H ments, Hoist asks and needs nsuist- H mice in the construction of its road H into the Hamblin Valley, Newcastle H is iri need of further road nppropria- H tions, the Coal Creek canyon cast of H Cedar City has a perpetual appetite H for money to keep -it a. all passable, H but we doubt if in all the list there H is u call ati imporativo as that of the H stretch of road a few miles this side H of Kanarravillc, which represents a H complete barrier in w.ct weather for H the passage of all kinds of auto travel H into the Dixie country over the state H ' highway. Until this two or three H moles of road is capped with some H suitable material the road between H here and Washington county cannot M bo said to bo in a condition for all the H year travel. Only a few days since H this piece of road was literally lined H v,x. with automobiles that wore hopelessly BP" stuck in the mud and had to bo pulled H ' out with teams. H L We are informed that there is an H excellent road material on the foot of M the adjacant hills, and thut there are B ,a good many teams and men at Ka- H narra who would be willing to donate B ' one-half of their work in capping this , stretch of road, in order to secure u H passable road for their own conven- M ience, if the state and county will fur- H nish money for the other half und pro- M vido a suitable trap for the loading of H their wugons. Of course, the work H would have to be timed so as not to H interfere with their farm labors. We H respectfully commend this course to H the attention of the county comniis- H sioncrs and the dtate road commission H for their consideration. S At any rate, some means must be H , devised and that very soon for the re- B pair of this stretch of road, which of- H fens tho most serious impediment to B the transportation of the United H States mails us well ns to all other M forms and exigencies of travel. |
