Show B1GEL0W NAILS ! 1 1 MALICIOUS LIE Purported Register of Auto Travel Over Various Routes Prove Very Unreliable. OBJECT IS TO "KNOCK" THE ARROWHEAD TRAIL If Only 1 244 Tourists Used Trail During 10 Months Then Fully Two-Thirds of the Cars Passing Must Have Been Driverless. C. H. Bigelow, state road agent for Iron and Washington counties, was in Cedar City yesterday morning, having recently returned from southeren California Cal-ifornia He states that the tourist influx to southern California is unprecedented un-precedented this year. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 tourists tour-ists or transcients are already in Los Angeles and the real winter tourisc does not arrive until after the first of the year. Hotels are all full, private homes have been requisitioned as far as possible, and many tents are being erected to take care of the visitors to the city. Mr. Bigelow's advice is to wire in to the Chamber of Commeri o at least a week ahead for reservations, Bj there are many all the while who cannot .get accommodations Discussing road questions, Mr. Bigelow Big-elow stated that th.re was a bigger and better opportunity to obtain publicity pub-licity for the Arrowhead Trail this winter in California than there had ever been before. His old friends in the newspaper business and the automobile auto-mobile gains are all back from France and are all ready to "shoot" on this question wheen he gives the word. m iiw n i-i the bul.lioiiv bullets iirti for the moat part made, too, and he is now only awaiting the completion of details and I the cooperation of the officers of the Arrowhead Trails Association, which is expected to materialize at the meet- ing of the association to be held in this city next month. There is to be a large automobile show in Los Angelas Ange-las in February, and Mr. Bigelow has been assured of valuable concessions to assist his publicity campaign. He is reticent as to just what he intends doing, but it is known that there are J moving picture films, stereoptican slides and electrotype plate illustrations illustra-tions in abundance of the Zion Park and other scenic attractions of this section, and it is doubtless the intention inten-tion when the time comes to deliver a broadside which will shake the established es-tablished tourist traditions to their foundations and send stream of automobile'- over the Arrowhead Trail next summer which will tax all the accommodations along the route to their limit to take car' of it. Nails a Maliciou Lie. In refutation of an article which appeared ap-peared in a Salt Lake paper Nov. 26, purporting to give the figures for auto I travel in und out of the state via the I various routes, Mi Bigelow lias com- piled some interesting figures by the I month which gives the lie to the ar- tide refer;. mI to. The story referred Bj to was published in the Salt Lake fl Herald and purported to give a regis I tor tuble of tourists and was aecom- :. amed by an explanatory story in which it was made to appear that the fl number of tourist cars entering Utah over tre various routes were as fol-fl fol-fl lows: I Lincoln Highway BSSO Pike's Peuk Highwaj BBSS K Westland Trail 2572 Yellowstone Highway 680' .f-fl Evergreen Truil 1828 ' Arrowhead Trail 1244 H Mr. Bigelow had no means of check-fl check-fl ing the figures on the travel over the J various highways other than the Ar- I rowhead Trail, but the following fig- I ures on the monthly flow checked on I the Arowhead Trail at the Virgin Riv I er between Mesquite and Hunkerville fl leads us to doubt all the figures pun I lished in the Herald: I January' number cars crossing 278 I February, number cars crossing 320 1 March, number cars crossing 32i April, number of cars crossing 800 fl May, number cars crossing UO June, number of ears crossing 440 July, number cars crossing 000 August, number of cars crossing liiio Hpjt September, number cars Crossing 600 October, number cars crossing 450 November( number can cro ling 128 December, number of cats crossing 300 Total for year 41)52 The above record is less than tin- actual ac-tual number because it represents only on-ly the number toned across the river by the team maintained by (Mark Co., Nevada, for that purpose, end during low water many cars effect the Virgin ford without aid. According to Mr l.eavitt, who is employed to tow the cars, about !)0' of the travel is north bound until July 1st, and after that date the balance swings gradual!) until un-til during December this percentage is reversed, making the average for the year about 50-50 north and south. According to the Herald article above quoted, but 1244 persons used the Arrowhead Ti-nil for the first tan nionih.if the year. The netiml num-mer num-mer of Identified cars for these same ten months was 4224 Assuming an average of three persons to the car, we And that 12t!7'' tourists traveled through southern Utah during 1919, via the Arrowhead Trail. It is cinte apparent that the author of the article published in the Herald was interested in boosting travel over a competing line and wilfully sought to mislead the traveling public in regard re-gard to the matter The fact remains that not only is the Arrowhead Trail the best route to southern California, but it is the only all-weather route, and with the impioveincnts now under way and authorized, it will be the only auto road into California from this state worthy of consideration.
