One of the most heroic fights for life that has been witnessed in Cedar City for a long time, is being put up over at the Southern Utah Hospital by Maybe Matheson, the 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan. E. Matheson, Mathe-son, who reside two or three miles from Enoch, in this valley. Maybe and his brother Dwayne, who is a few years his senior, were water ing in the field. The older boy had the pistol in his pocket nnd in turning the water it fell from his pocket into the stream. He picked it up and was in the act of removing the cartridges. his brother sitting on the opposite bank of the ditch, when the weapon was accidentally discharged, the ball entering the younger boy's abdomen 1 in the vicinity of the naval and com- I ing out through his hip bone. I The boy was rushed to the Southern Utah Hospital and was operated on by Drs. Leonard and Macfarlane, hut not until between three and four hours had elapred. It was found that the biilK-t had pierced the intestine in five places. The repairs were made as neatly as possible and every pre- I caution known to modern surgery was taken, but at best it was conceded by such authority as Dr. Middleton, who was here the following day, that the boy had a very slim chance, indeed, for his life. However, five days have now passed and while the lad is in a desperat" condition, with a general peritonitis, he appears to be holding his own, ami every hour the chances are multiplying for his recovery. If he survives the next 24 hours Dr. Leonard states that he will feel very sanguine of saving him. |
