Vera Cruz is filled with refugee Americans n- waiting opportunity to sail for the United States. Every train arriving " hero brings from fifty to 100 men, women and children who expect to embark on transports, but as yet no Btcamer has arrived, with tho result I that tho hotels and rooming houses ; ' are filled with Americans on their way home. Many have taken advantage of Consul Con-sul Cannda's instructions, and aro quartered on board tho battleship No-, No-, braska, whore they nrc awaiting trans- t-fcr to the first available steamship , JP1 bound for the United States. Tonight a special train of ten box cars carrying from 500 to GOO refugees, refu-gees, is expected. As all available rooming space is occupied, many of these persons will be compelled to walk the streets unless it Is possible for them to be carried to the battle- ship. Special launches aro being run to the Nebraska at intervals of two hours, and during tho forenoon today these have been crowded with those seeking safe quarters. Consul Canada said today that It was unlikely that the transport would reach here before Juno 28, and that the probablcm of taking caro of tho many Americans arriving dally was becoming a serious one. Among the arrivals there are members who have the means to pay for any accommoda- tions thnt could be oflered them, but as no accommodations are available their funds are of no assistance to them in this respect. As Americans wore ordered by diplomatic dip-lomatic and consular agents mora than a week ago to seek coast ports, there is much complaint among the refugees over the delay in tho arrival of vessels to transport them. Up to this time no acts of violence or interruption of tho movements of Americans on the part of the Mexican government have been reported. Everywhere Ev-erywhere the order of General Car-ranzu Car-ranzu not to molest those Americans who are seeking to leave tho country has keen scrupulously obeyed. A Bpeclal train of twelve box cars arrived here tonight with 250 men, women and children. Robert Van Law a prominent mining man was among tho passengers. Many Americans also arrived in the regular passenger train from Mexico City. James Linn Rod-gcrs, Rod-gcrs, special agont of the state department de-partment in Mexico City, arranged for tho transit of the special train, but did not come to Vera Cruz on it. No transport to carry the refugees is In sight so far and tho battleship NevraBka is overcrowded. |
