Fiber or artificial silk is a vegetable product made, wholly from wood or from cotton, while pure silk is animal liber, taken wholly from the cocoon. A simple method to distinguish the fiber from the pure silk Is to place hose of each kind side by side, nnd by examining both it will be found that the urtiflclni silk has a higher luster than tho pure silk. Next, take the fiber silk In both hnnds nnd note the hnrshness of the feel and the absence of much elasticity. By going through the same process with the pure silk hose the reverse will be found to be the case. Tho phrase, "mercerized silk," Is used upon mnny occasions by thoso who should know better. There Is no such thing as mercerized silk. The process of niereerlzatlon Is applied to cotton to supply a silky luster. Dry Goods Economist. |
