Show INCIDENTS OF THE STORM The snow out on the desert is reported re-ported to have been ten inches deep when the real storm broke loose here. Jordan & Brown sent their freight trucks out as usual, their big Klieber unions the others, and they all had to turn around and come back. The snow would keep pushing ahead and packing hard until the vehicles could no longer force their way. Several passenger cars were stranded strand-ed west of Iron Springs. Engineer (ieter X. Gardner left here Wednesday evening in R. S. Gardner's car. Resides getting into the engine through the rudiator and giving trouble, the snow packed ahead of the machine until it was no longer able to make headway and had to be abandoned. The occupants of the car had to walk several miles back to Iron Springs in order to reach a telephone tele-phone and summon help, which vfns responded to by Mr. Rice of the Kopp Garage. Mr. David Thompson of Enterprise also left for home Wednesday evening even-ing to spend Thanksgiving and failed to get through. All mail and passenger cars between Cedar and i,und were reported stranded, strand-ed, and north and south bound passenger passen-ger trains Nos. 1 and 2 were stopped at Lund. According to reports, a large number num-ber of touring cars were stopped south of the Black Ridge at and near Belle-vue, Belle-vue, being unable to negotiate the road over the ridge. . 15 inches of snow was reported in Parowan at noon. There is no excuse, in the opinion of Sheriff Proyd of this county, for the roads remaining impassable through this county for more than three days. With teams at the California ranch, at Lund and at Cedar City, it should have been a simple matter to break a road through the snow. The same condition is true in other parts of the county. But the trouble is that no one was expecting such a storm at this season of the year, and it took quite a while for it to soak in that we were really up against a serious situation, situ-ation, and then equipment had to be tried out and proven suitable before it was dispatched on the roads. Another time should occasion arise, we trust that the road departments of the county coun-ty and state better prepared to cope with the situation. |
