Once upon a time, so this story i kindly lady was passing along: life's highway and she met a jrroup of children playing. First came a lad "honking" vociferously. The lady Inquired In-quired what their c.amo miirht be and Was Informed that they were plnvinj; automobile. "I'm the horn," said the honker. "I'm the wheels." said another. an-other. "I'm the body," said the third, and so on. The gay procession passed and presently, plodding along disconsolately discon-solately by himself, came a little pickaninny. pick-aninny. "What are you, Sambo '.'" asked the lady. "Who, me?" replied Sambo. Tee de stink." This story was told as a "comic" hut my friends, it strikes me that it contains also a leson we miirht well consider carefully. In all communities, unfortunately, we encounter at least some Sambos and Samboettes, They an- "de stink." Their sole function r r.-eard to the program of the car of deetiny seems I to be "d,. stink." An- you a Sambo or a Samboette? Think it over- friend and determine I iir your own mind jusi what constitu ent of the car you at ', Are you the horn, invinw warninp. to vnur brothers of danger, or tooting lustily to herald our progress? or. Are you one of the headlights shining in the dark stretches on the road to light the way, ; to keep our car out of the ditches anil i to keep it from plunging over the' precipices of mistakes and danger? or, Are you one of the wheels, equipped equip-ped with strong spokes, ball bearing, running smoothly and true, helping hourly to take up and lessen the hock and tn help the smoothly run- ning engine to perform itt work'.' Arc you a part of the bod; of our car. helping to hold the load of human ' destiny safe from the road? Arc- you the chassis, strong and well tried, bearing the precious load safely over the road? Are you the engine, furnishing furn-ishing the power to our car that we ma) ultimately reach a desirable 'des tination with as few break downs as possible? If you are the carburetor, do you strive to keep clean all the time so ss to cause a minimum of t n pine trouble? Perhaps ou are the chains, Strong and true to keep mural mu-ral from skidding iii the dangerous places, or, r-e you onl "de stink"" Whatever you arc my friend, you are an Integral part of our little car, .111.1 our success or failure as a colon) depends entirely on jusi bow- efficient you individually are . Only, if you are "de stink." then for heaven' take dap on the muffler and reduce Iha1 stink and tin- accompanying noise. both u.-eless and undesirable, to hi in. ill an amount as possible. I know that no car can be operated e -it i . and that the higher the d and the greater the efficiency the more noise and s'ink. Put. friends, hoth are :i mil mil Ind a ca iful ..II the woi kins parts and t of the muffler will re-both re-both to tin- minimum. Let UH keep o : inek and si... , ick ami frrease, , running true and clean and sweet. Now a word about your pilot. Watch your pilot, if he ii s I pilot help him all you can. Help him er the i ar careful! . See that he keep I hi - ai In good repaii L When you come to the pleasant the roa.l. stop awhile and let things cool off. Fill your radiator ith the watet I of human kind) that your tank is full of the loyalty, loy-alty, charity and forebearance brand of pure gasoline.; see that plentiful supply of the oil of patience and bra therly love is a'ways on hand to keen all parte running smoothly, See that . an chosen pilot kee,,s m all these thiiit Bee to it that you have chosen chos-en a good pilot. If you find that you hue made a mistake; if his driving is reckless; if he fails to heed the sijzns; if his references of past cm ployment an- faked; then, my friends, take thai pilot (irmly by the nape of the neck and seat of his overalls and hoist him out of the pi'ots seat and put a new pilot at the steering wheel. If we do these things we will cir tainly negotiate the bad places in the road ahead of uv and will finally reach a high destination and remain in honor- and a desirable unit in population pop-ulation of this grant State and in our own valley. If we don't, we will wreck our own car, and leave what is irow a beautiful, smoothly running machine, a pile of unsightly scrap and all that will be left to attract the passer-by will be "de stink."
