Included in the list are LfH automobiles, clothing, household serv- H ants, jewi'lry, hotel bills, gasoline', mo- H tion pictures, musical instruments, P neckwear. and furs. ppH The taxes upon most of the articles H named in the list would be collected on retail sales. The tax on gasoline would be paid by the wholesale dealer. ppH It is fixed at 10 cents a gallon, while PH the automobile tax is graduated from $15 to $50, according to horsepower VH "Waste and ertravagance are trea- son," says the treasury department in proposing the radical method of rais- H ing revenue for carrying on the war. H "The retail sale tax distinctly labels IH the taxed articles as a luxury and PH serves notice that the covcrnment's ban is honest." Members of the committee were as- H founded at some of the department's H recommendations. It was stated H frankly by several of the committee- lH men that many of the suggestions "bsbbssI to taxable articles would not be con- H sidered seriously. H Following is the complete list sub H mitted by the department: H To be collected on retail sales: fl Fifty per cent on the retail price' of jewelry, including watches and clocks, H iv ept those sold to army officers, Hj Twenty per cent on automobile H trailers and truck units, motorcycles, H bicycles, automobile, motor cycle and H bicycle tires anil musical instrument. H A tax on all men's suits selling for I more than ISO) hats over $4; shirts H over $2; hosiery over .'!: shoes over H $5; gloves over $2; underwear ovnr $'!, and nil neckwear and canes. H On women's suits over S10; coats H over $.'(0; ready-.made gowns over $35; skirts over $15; hats over $10; shoes I over $!; lingerie over $5; corsets over H $5; dress goods (silk) over $1.50 a H yard; cotton over 50 cents a square H yard, unci wool over $2 a sepiare yard. H All furs, boas and fans.
