Mr. Stephenson returned recently from Mexico, where he and his associates own thousands of head of cattle. He reports a most deplorable condition of ' affairs as existing in the northern north-ern provinces. His company attempted at-tempted to bring several thousand thous-and head of cattle across the line a few weeks since but were interceptedby brigandsand forced forc-ed to abandon the cattle. Last - week some of their men succeed-ed succeed-ed in getting across the line into in-to New Mexico with 197 head of horses. As they crossed the border and reached safety on the American side, a band of 60 Mexicans were but three miles behind them. It has been but a few weeks since he made a trip by auto toColonia Diaz, formerly a thriving Mormon town, with , good homes and substantial improvements, im-provements, but there was remaining re-maining but two houses, all other buildings having been . burned to the ground. W. J., Seely, speaker of the house of representatives during the last session, and at present traveling deputy state auditor, ; was in Cedar City Monday en ?, route to St. George. Anderson returned Tuesday Tues-day from points in Nevada, where he has spent the last six weeks gathering up cattle for shipment to the market. He reports the southern part of Uath and eastern Nevada as! being be-ing very dry. many springs that have never before been Known to fail have gone dry within the last few weeks. He states that dry land wheat on his farm is looking fine and gives promise of good yield. |
