Show H GOOD ROADS AS WATCHWORD H H C(,R a "umber of years the importance of the H ' question of good roads tias bctCJ forcing itself H upon us M a nation. The more that has been done H in the line of road Improvement, the more con- H verts have been made to the doctrine of good H roads, until it is no longer necessary to argue with H people of the Importance of good highwaya over H idl important routes of travel. In fact it has come H to be a mark of non-progreealveneu to live in a H locality where the roads ere not good. H The question ol good roads is receiving much H attention in recent years and the sentiment for H Pedt ral aid for the Improvement of highwaya H is growing throughout tin nation, as reflected by H Congress, and provision is being made for Fi'deval H aid in the construction of good roads In states and localities where there is sufficient interest shown I for substantial cooperation, I Now comea forward the state Legislature with B a bill for the Issuance and sale of $5,000,000 worth H of bonds, the proceeds of which are to be used in H the construction and maintenance of permanent 3 highways throughout the state. The bill as draft- H ed, was published in full in these columns last i- B ue. That the bill will become a law' there is little H doubt in the minds of persona in a position to M ' know the temper of the Legislature, and when it H goes into opt ration the benefits and assistance m provided for in the measure, will go more freely m to those counties of the state who place themseh in a position to co-operate by the raising of money OH their own account to nugment the appropria-' appropria-' tions from the state. This is a most opportune time for us to consider con-sider the matter of a bond issue for Iron county. . The amount suggested by prominent men of the ' county who'' have given serious consideration to the matter, is $100,000. This amount added to I the state allotments and such sums aa can be ob-: ob-: tnined on a co-operative basis from the Federal Government should make the roads of Iron county as good as any in the state, excepting, possibly, in paved districts. It is likely to be a question of "The early bird getting the worm," and right now is the time to get our "fences up" for this movement. We believe be-lieve the County Commissioners are not averse to the plan of bonding, and if the people will only in some way signify their approval, we feel sure no! time will be lost in submitting the matter to a vote of the people. & |
