Show HARSH W0RDS0F COL BRYAN j Urbana, Ohio, Aug. 5. Colonel W. J. j Bryan was the attraction at the Chautauqua assembly here today. Th? convention of Chautauqua county to-nominate to-nominate a ticket and select delegates to the convention at Columbus two weeks hence was also held today, ani Bryan's presence was -made the occasion occa-sion for a conference - of leaders. Ic has been announced as the occasion for making the Johnson programme for the state convention, but the invitations invita-tions of the committee were not limited lim-ited to any faction. Among those ac- j cepting invitations were Mayor John- i son of Cleveland, John L. Zimmerman of Springfield and former Congressman I Lentz of Columbus. . While the visitors addressed the convention con-vention the principal work was done in private conferences. Johnson is rec-organized rec-organized as a candidate for the next Democratic nomination for president, and all the movements for the governorship govern-orship or for the senatorship this year are considered preliminary to the national na-tional contest next year. It Is said that former Congressman Lentz will present Johnson's name to the convention for governor, and Ji Johnson is nominated that Lentz will be indorsed for senator. The delegates to the state convention selected by the county convention are for Zimmerman for governor. The resolutions res-olutions indorse both the Chicago and I Kansas City platforms ' and express continued confidence in Bryan. Ex-Congressman Ex-Congressman Lentz and others on the platform congratulated Colonel Bryan on the resolutions. Colone! Bryan. In his address to th.j large audience, including those attending attend-ing the Chautauqua assembly, denied that he was a disturber, as charged by, some who - disturbed the party for years. He says the trouble with the Democratic party began in 1892, when a "bunco steerer" led the party into the net of Wall street, just as confidence confi-dence men work individuals. He insisted insist-ed that the' same "hnnrn sfArins?' could not be repeated, and that those who had not been loyal could not resume re-sume leadership, until after they be-1 came at least repentant. The money question was not paramount today, but plutocracy was seeking to control the party for all its purposes. Mayor Johnson entered as Bryan was speaking, and the speaker stopped to shake hands with him, while the audience audi-ence cheered. Colonel Bryan then resumed re-sumed the discussion of issues 6f the day and spoke for one hour. |
