Show CATHOLICS TO ABSTAIN FROM VOTING. Rome, June 29. Seeing all that has been written about the necessity of arganizlng the Catholic voters of Rome to expel the Masonic and Socialist So-cialist "bloc" municipality that has ruled the Eternal City from the Capitol Capi-tol for nearly three years. It may seem strange to many that the Catholic party has almost decided, if not fully, to abstain from the urns next month, when the municipal elections are to be held. And yet, on hearing of the reasons adduced in favor of what would apparently be a very strange proceeding, people will probably con-conclude con-conclude that the program of not vo-tlnar vo-tlnar is the correct one. It is certain that the "bloc" municipality munic-ipality if Rome is discredited throughout through-out the city. It has done little but try to hamper the Church, and even in this it has met with failure. It has organized an International exhibition exhib-ition to be opened in this city in May, 1911, which, through lack of business busi-ness capacity of the committee, and on account of the time that "has been lost in the work, is likely to prove a failure, if we are to believe several prophets. Now, the Catholic party declares it is better to allow the "bloc" another term of office in order or-der that it may fully exhaust Itself, and that the eyes of the people may be fully opened to the worthlessness of the men and their promises. But there is another reason adduced ad-duced for the policy of abstention. Should the Catholic party get into power as, oi course, tney snouia n fully organized it would not be pleasant to have thrown on its hands an intenational exhibition left half finished by their predecessors in power. pow-er. Though the president of the exhibition ex-hibition eommittc declares that the enterprise will be quite ready, most people here doubt that such can be the case. And thus it is that, everything every-thing considered, it may be the wisest plan for the Catholics to allow their opponents plenty of rope to destroy themselves as far as their influence for evil in the future is concerned. |
