Show SACRED HEART ACADEMY. An Instructive Lecture. Through the genial hospitality of Mr. Frank Driggs of the institute for the deaf and blind, and the gracious courtesy of Professor Maud May Bab-cock Bab-cock of the University of Utah, the senior pupils of Sacred Heart academy were privileged to listen last week to a very instructive lecture on "Dress Reform," a topic that should be of general Interest In these days of "deformed "de-formed dressing." The steropticon views which served to illustrate Professor Pro-fessor Babcock's discussion added not a little to the interest of the lecture and carried conviction where words might have failed. Clear statements, earnest arguments and sincere interest j in the welfare of her hearers rendered i i the lecture one not soon to be forgotten. forgot-ten. Though the young ladies may not all have the courage to adopt the styles of costumes recommended by Professor Babcock, they cannot fail to ' see the common sense point of viey from which she spoke and to realize that while conforming to the styles of the day they are but emphasizing Tuckerman's words: "Fashion seldom interferes with nature without diminishing dimin-ishing her grace and efficiency." Devotees of Saint Luke. ; Anticipating the feast of their patron, pa-tron, the pupils of the art studio celebrated cel-ebrated last Saturday by an outing to ;the Ogden canyon, where they found ' nature with her swiftest strokes of frost had surpassed them in her magnificent mag-nificent results on tree and mountain. The elements realized the importance of Ogden visitors that day, for the young ladies averred that not a drop of rain fell in the canyon, though poor, inartistic home-folks perceived quite a downpour. All reported a delightful time. A Welcome VLsitor. Rev. J. F. Nugent, pastor of St. Rose's church, San Francisco, was a welcome visitor at Sacred Heart last Sunday. Father Nugent is returning from Rome, where he was privileged j tohave an audience with His Holiness, ! Pius X. He proudly boasts of having knelt at the feet of the last three Popes, a record not made by many. At 7:30 Father Nugent celebrated mass in the convent chapel at Sacred Heart and spent the day in the Junction Junc-tion City, leaving for the coast on Monday last. I A Womanly Accomplishment, i Plain sewing receives due attention , at the academy; in fact, some of the j newcomers are inclined to think It i3 ! made too important a part of their training, but they will realize later that it will be invaluable. Equally, or almost al-most equally, important is the art of needlework, for which the academy has ever been noted. Every Saturday morning the seniors devote two hours to this delightful task, and Christmas i days will see beautiful designs adorning adorn-ing centre tables and dressers, and many artistic notions the result of these hours of painstaking labor. |
