Show A Protestant's Funny Reasons. TJie recent census of church attendance in New York, if we may credit the reports that have come j to us. exhibits some rather surprising things, says the New Century. For instance, we are assured , that Protestant churches which offer expensive music mu-sic provide an aosrhetie ritual and maintain high-salaried high-salaried preachers, are no better attended than churches which depend cm congregational singing, have nothing that may be dignitied by the name of ritual and which pay their preachers a mere living salary. j In The Living Church, a Protestant journal, a j writer, commenting on the census of the churches, suggests that the reason for the comparative faith-i faith-i fulness of Catholics in attending church -services i may be racial. "The Roman Catholic Church in America is Trish." said he. Ard then he makes the ! very surprising statement that "many Roman Cath- olic churches have Masses for German members"' I How funny! The enumerators began their count of the Catholic Cath-olic churches at ( o'clock on a Sunday morning and at 10 they turned their attention to the Protectant churches.. Here is what the writer says:. "They (the enumerators) were startled by tlie contrast with the Roman Church which they had seen filed S again and again." The census while by no means thorough or con-" vincing, shows a gratifying increase of over 10(5,000 j in attendance at the Catholic churches compared , with last year. |
