Show 1 Friendship. (By Rena E. Olds.) 1 What is that subtile, fair, elusive thin-as thin-as friendship known? A paltry toy? A thing to lie allured, embraced, then lighty thrown A passing joy? Stand forth, my soul, and tell me softly what it means in part To have a friend: How much of joy or pain, perchance, another heart To thee dost lend. Then sweetly clear and sure the answer came, inspired by heav'n. To my rapt ear: "There is no boon on earth, I ween, to mortals giv'n. Than friends more dear. "A drawing, heart to heart, by some unseen, obscure, innate Affinity: Then confidence and trust, than which one step more great Divinity. ":More strong than brother love; of many a life the secret pow'r-T pow'r-T had a friend.' Not all its work complete till faith and love each hour Together blend." A friend is there in me to undestand. to satisfy Some other heart? Is He a Friend of mine? Then He will help me try To do my part. i |
