Show W fn OLSON MEETS METS NANSON matison the meeting of the womans comans political club at the M E church last monday night was something of a disappointment to those who camo came to hear the ele electric otric plant question qu tion discussed discue sed for the reason remon that mr olson found it impossible to be present having been detained in salt lake however there was a nice program consisting of a piano solo by mrs C H Stoven stevenson sov a recitation by miss bliss hurst and a violin buot by villie pace and master andersen anderson mr nr olson olsons absence gave some of the busybodies a chance to circulate th report that he be was afraid to discuss the qi question estion in IQ public but this appears to have bebin a mistake for as soon as be he returned he told the ladies he was ready to discuss the question at any time and place plate with this understanding a meeting wis was arranged for last night at the same place then mr gunderson I 1 and others who want to see the plaint plant leased got busy and induced the la dies to allow mr mansion manhon the pretended lessee to speak at the meet ing olson had no objection so 3 joint meeting was advertised for th the city hall mayor gunderson and councilman pace constituting themselves a committee to peddle piddle hand bills about town at 8 th the hall was comfortably filled frank olson camo came unattended but when the leasing champion chim pion arrived he was chaperoned by mayor aunders G undersea ot who sat in mansons corner during the meeting olson opened by relating the his hi tory of municipal ownership and operation in price the cost of the plant and the hard times experienced in nursing the infant during the first two lears ears of its existence finally however the plant began to pay its way and it if is given credit for the extensions of lines and the street lighting and wlter pumping it was paying the city handsomely when leased to mr minson manson for leas than half enough to pay the interest oa oia the ia investment vestment mr olson admitted that the service had becu better since manson took it but explained that new machinery bought and paid for by the city had been installed just before the plant was leased the speaker read from technical m magazines the experience of other town towns with municipal plants many of these plants like our own hid had hard sledding at first but were finally made to pay handsome dividends to the people together with a saving in rates to consumers coni umers mr ir manson followed and began by trying to make it appear that it ws was wr to make the price plant pay than some of those quoted by mr olson he lie then read the tho city connell cila apology for leasing the plant publia Pu published blip aled elsewhere in this issue and brhen he was asked a question regarding the alleged deficit in the operating of the plant under municipal control he allowed recorder lauber to get et in his horn and darned tear arlott lost his meeting melting as mr lauber ippen red to get the idea thit that he was the speaker of the ilie evening and held the floor for ten tan minutes after mattson got the floor away from lauber again he be that he bad lost money on his operation of the plant and know that he wanted another leio leso when emmet C tl fw olson why ho be was arguing against the th lease if ho lie wank want it he replied that he was here hero to refute the lies that have havo appeared in the C carbon irbon county news asked to specify a single lio lie ho lie stated that it was false tatt helper was belling salling juice at do 90 A little later he ad that helper DID lime haea a nine cent tent rate for those who used a certain amount of juice so he had no lie on the carbon county news he read an extract from a letter from his hir wit wife in which the lady said she hoped he would not get got another lease it would be too bad to vote tote against the wishes of this lonely wife so let lot us vote against the lease and rel release easo mr manson from his hi arduous dutie in handling the profits of a light plant in which he a cent cont invested the speaker called attention to the fact that it was worth to the city to have iti its streets and public buildings lighted and water pumped by electricity tah he was giving the city free mr olson came back and stated that under municipal ownership and operation the streets had bad been lighted and the water pumped manson and his friends must give the plant credit for this in addition to the amount collected from consumers if they wanted to be fair they hid not done this manson had stated he was paying 1200 per year for the plant but mr olson disputed and disproved this for while he be pays for sixty months the city rebates him 2000 of this amount for keeping the tho plant in ir repair leaving rental which is equivalent to per year or per month a return of 24 per cent on an investment vest mont of 32 to get this ay aj per cent the city is paying 6 per cent on its electric light bonds a clear loss of aj per cent on every dollar invested in the lighting plant to say nothing of the wear and tear on the plant mr manson again took the floor and stated that under municipal control the council paid 1100 for fora a boiler that was bought in salt labs lake for olson replied that if this was the case he knew nothing of it as the boiler was purchased by the lighting committee which the records show was composed of loofbourow fouts and whitmore both speakers signifying thai that they had closed chairman H G mathis declared the meeting adjourned the applause was about abou t evenly divided for the speakers but it wax was noticeable that mr olsons encouragement came mostly f from om taxpayers hile bile that froni from mr manson camo from a few taxpayers and a lot of others who will not be eligible to vote tomorrow the secret of mr mansons Mana ons keen desire to tie up the plant for five or ten ton years on a lease and get et possession of it through the present administration finist ration with whom ho he is in close touch is the fact that the operating expenses can be cut down more inore than that one half by the use of water power mr anson suson and SOMO some of his associates were heard to betray this scheme which was figured out some time ago by a practical engineer water power can easily be obtained here and tan be condemned to thie this use provided it is turned back into channel under this the parent system t the ho electric light plant of price would realize a profit of more than 1000 per month mouth lif after ter all 11 ex benses wore were paid and an increase from year to year as business extended in figuring the expenses of operating the plant under mimi municipal cipal control mr manson blanson and the city council have in many instances charged improvements prove ments and extensions up to operating expenses this ia is wrong as it makes it appear tho the plant was losing money when just the opposite was the case ease whether this was done to deceive the people or whether it was wi duo due to error errors ia in bookkeeping tho now news does not care to state it is doubtful if mr manson and bis his friends made anything by the meeting as too many holes were picked in mansons Min sona figures by mr olson the question is new up to tho the people to decide if ff they want to lease the plant they will cay say so at the polls tomorrow any man or woman qualified to vote at other elections is qualified to vote tote tomorrow provided they paid taxes in this city for 1914 either real or personal |
